Pregnant Pakistani woman stoned to death by her family members

A pregnant woman is beaten to death by her relatives outside a court building. Her crime? To elope with the man she loved rather than marry the groom chosen by her family.

pakistan-womanThe terrible fate of Farzana Parveen, 25, is one shared by all too many women in Pakistan and elsewhere.

She was killed in the name of “honor,” on the grounds her actions had brought shame on her family.

According to a report published in April by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, 869 women in the country were the victims of honor killings last year. And activists say the true number may be much higher.

Parveen’s brutal killing is all the more shocking because it was so public.

She was beaten to death with bricks close to the high court in the eastern city of Lahore by a group of about 20 people, including her brothers, father and cousin, police said.

So-called honor killings often originate from tribal traditions in Pakistan, but are not a part of Islam. Although they’re common in rural areas, Tuesday’s attack in a public area of a big city was unusual.

Fire at South Korean hospital for elderly kills 21

south-koreaA fire broke out at a South Korean hospital for the elderly early Wednesday, killing 21 people — most of them patients in their 70s and 80s who had difficulty walking.

Police said that after examining video footage, they had detained a patient suffering from dementia whom they suspect of starting the blaze in the southern county of Jangseong.

The man, who is in his early 80s and was identified only by his surname of Kim, denies causing the fire, said Roh Gyu-ho, the head of Jangseong Police Station.

Although the fire was put out quickly, many of the victims, unable to move around easily, were believed to have been killed by asphyxiation from toxic fumes that filled the second floor of the two-story building.

Twenty patients and a nurse died, the National Emergency Management Agency said, and eight people were injured, six of them seriously.

The head of the hospital, Lee Hyong-seok, apologized Wednesday in front of television cameras.

Why Turks were Able to Exterminate Armenians, but not Jews

(Part II)

This is the second and final part of a column I wrote last month, analyzing why the Young Turks were able to exterminate the Armenians, but could not carry out their simultaneous plan to eliminate the Jewish settlers of Palestine.

On May 9, 1917, Reuters disseminated the following news report by settler Aaron Aaronsohn: “an order was given to deport all Jews from Tel Aviv, including citizens of the Central Powers [Germany and Austria-Hungary], within 48 hours. A week before, 300 Jews were expelled from Jerusalem. Jamal Pasha declared that their fate would be that of the Armenians. The 8,000 deportees from Tel Aviv were not allowed to take any provisions with them, and after the expulsion their houses were looted by Bedouin mobs.”

Shortly thereafter, Oskar Cohen, a Jewish socialist member of the German Parliament, asked the Chancellor to press the Turkish government “to vigorously prevent the recurrence in Palestine of atrocities” against Jews similar to the ones committed against the Armenians.

On June 8, Aaronsohn wrote in his diary: “The cry we raised was effective. The Turks and the Germans were quick to realize that one cannot get away with slaughtering the Jews like the Armenians. German financing of the war might have suffered because of the Jews. Therefore they ceased the new deportations.”

Palestine, the official journal of the British Zionist movement, described the significant difference between the lobbying capabilities of Jews and Armenians: “The German government knows that the Jews do not compare to the Armenians in terms of their world power, and that the weight of the Jews in Germany is therefore different from that of the Armenians.”

Mordecai Ben-Hillel Hacohen, a prominent chronicler of Jewish history in Palestine, wrote in his diary of March 30, 1917: “the Turkish government has been stained in the eyes of the whole country because of its crime against the Armenians, and perhaps the government will reconsider its thoughts of doing thus to the Jews as well….”

Moshe Smilansky, a leader of the Jewish agricultural settlements in Palestine, after relating reports of the terrible massacres of Armenians, concluded: “The testimony of the eye witnesses aroused fear and panic in the Jewish audience. Who knows what would have been our fate were it not for Morgenthau, the American representative in Constantinople, and the fear of the world press which is ‘controlled’ by the Jews.”

Yair Auron reported in his book that Meir Dizengoff, a leader of the Jewish refugees in Palestine throughout World War I, “worked in close cooperation with the Zionist delegation in Constantinople, which was pro-German and pro-Turkish. According to Dizengoff, there were also excellent relations with the German consul in Palestine…. The consul served as a conduit for transferring funds to the Yishuv [Jewish community], on orders from the German Ambassador in Constantinople.” Dizengoff also stated that the Germans were the ones who assisted and saved the Yishuv. “The fact that Jamal Pasha became more sympathetic to the Jews was due to Germany.” Dizengoff recalled Jamal and Enver Pashas’ threats to the Jews: “Zionists beware! If you oppose us, we will do to you what we have done to the Armenians.”

In October 1917, when the Turkish authorities uncovered the Jewish Nili spy ring, a new threat loomed over the Jewish settlers in Palestine, giving yet another excuse for the Turks to oppress them. They feared that such anti-Turkish efforts would result in harsh counter-measures as practiced against Armenians. The Turkish Governor of Haifa met with Jewish leaders of the village of Zichron Yaakov on October 4, 1917, and threatened that unless they cooperated with his demands, he would do to them what he did to Armenians. He told them that he “barehandedly killed several Armenians, and his soldiers killed thousands of them.” Chaim Margalit-Kalvarisky, the representative of the Jewish Colonization Association in Galilee, wrote the following note in his diary: “I received word from a fairly dependable source that the [Turkish] high command was very angry at the Jewish settlement, and they were consulting about the possibility of a general deportation of all the Jews of Palestine to the furthest provinces of the Empire [Eastern Anatolia].” Kalvarisky recorded Jamal Pasha’s ominous words after a heated exchange with him: “Heaven help the people whose sons are those cursed spies. We taught the Armenian people a lesson about such deeds, and we will not hesitate to take the same steps in this case.”

Having witnessed the brutality of the Turks against Armenians who were accused of insubordination and rebellion, the Jewish settlers decided to be completely submissive and not challenge the Turkish authorities. Prof. Auron observed that “there was not a single attack by a Jewish settler on a Turkish soldier.” What ultimately saved the Jews was the occupation of Palestine by the British forces, precluding further brutalities and massacres by the Turkish authorities.

At the end, 1.5 million Armenians were wiped out, whereas the Jewish settlers of Palestine suffered relatively minor losses. During the war years, the Jewish population of Palestine was reduced from 86,000 to 55,000. Despite the fact that Armenians had also their advocates in Europe and the United States, the Jewish settlers enjoyed the double protection of powerful countries on both sides of the war: the Western countries, including the United States, and Germany, Turkey’s military ally. Vahakn Dadrian, in his book, “The History of the Armenian Genocide,” relates that Hans Wangenheim, the German Ambassador to Turkey, told US Ambassador Henry Morgenthau: “I will help the Zionists… but I shall do nothing for the Armenians.”

While Germany saved the Jewish settlers of Palestine, it assisted the Young Turk regime to exterminate the Armenians.

The State Commission on Coordination of the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide held its fourth session

6503

Today the 4th session of the State Commission on Coordination of the events dedicated to the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide held at Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex. The session was presided over by the Chairman of the Commission and the President of the RA Serzh Sargsyan.
Today’s enlarged session was aimed at finalizing the schedule and the strategy of the Commission’s actions in the run up to the official launch of the Centenary events. The members of the commission were joined by the representatives of regional Centenary committees from different communities, experts, diplomatic representatives of the Republic of Armenia, leaders of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church dioceses and members of the clergy from the Armenian Catholicosate of the Great House of Cilicia, Armenian Catholic Church of Cilicia and Armenian Evangelical World Council.

unnamed

President Serzh Sargsyan informed the participants that a conference of regional committee representatives took place the day before that discussed the preparations and upcoming projects in various countries in the world.

In his opening speech the President mentioned that after the first session, in the past three years, enormous organizational and preparatory work has been carried out within the framework of the Centenary events of the Armenian Genocide both in Armenia and in Diaspora and Artsakh. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora were assigned to support the creation of regional committees in different countries and coordinate the efforts in organizing local events.

“I appreciate that the regional committees have brought together representatives of various organizations and have engaged foreign scholars, state and political figures. Clerical organizations, traditional political parties, Pan-Armenian organizations and NGOs carry out focused work. Mass media make a big contribution with their role of raising awareness.
I attach great importance to the role of lobbying and advocacy structures, as well as to close cooperation with local authorities to carry out diverse activities. Armenian lawyers are compiling a legal package on the Armenian Genocide covering issues at individual, community and national levels.

This year Komitas Museum will open its doors; the renovation of the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial and the enlargement of the Armenian Genocide museum and the arrangements for the new exhibition will be finalized by next April, just a few examples out of numerous Centenary events to mention.

Dear colleagues,

There is no need to specify the order of the Armenian Genocide Centenary for each Armenian. Mets Yeghern is both a collective and an individual tragedy – one can hardly find an Armenian who has not learnt about the genocide from his or her family’s own tragedy. The order of the Centenary and its moral, psychological and political meaning is extremely important for current generations. This is why I think that each of us should have a personal sense and share of responsibility to ensure the success of the Centenary events and provide a new level of international awareness.

The order of the Armenian Genocide Centenary is strong both for all Armenians and the entire humanity. April 24, 1915 is not only the beginning of unprecedented extermination and dispossession of an entire people in the history of mankind, a date that of course is symbolic, but also the precursor of other genocides of the 20th century, proved by the later events.

The statutory limitation cannot be applied to the crimes against humanity. There is only one formula to prevent genocides and that is the recognition and condemnation of horrendous pages of the history of humankind. As a nation who has survived through genocide, we have a special mission to rule out repetition of such cataclysms.

On the eve of the Armenian Genocide Centenary we once again openly urge all the states and the international community to recognize and to condemn this unprecedented crime.

We, as a state and people, will carry on our struggle for both the international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide and against this most horrible crime committed against humanity in any corner of the world.

I would not disclose a secret by saying that Turkey’s decades-long official stance contrary to the simple, clear and evident truth has ultimately failed triggering countless questions on the official position among skeptical Turkish youth with increasingly growing numbers: thousands of Turks demand from their own government truth and justice. Many calls can be heard from different corners of the world urging the current Turkish authorities to put an end to their hopeless policy of denialism. Turkey has to understand that there is no alternative to facing the history and recognizing and condemning the Armenian Genocide, not to become an accomplice of the Ottoman Empire.

This circumstance and the undeniable facts force Turkish authorities to take steps. Official Ankara takes new measures that are sometimes unprecedented in terms of form, yet unfortunately display Turkey’s century-long policy of denialism in terms of content. They replicate the well-known Turkish positions that seek to distort the history, equalize the victim with the perpetrator, compare the incomparable. There is only one possible step Turkish authorities can take to free themselves from the heavy burden of the past and that is the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Half a step is not enough to achieve a tangible result.

I would like to inform you that I have sent invitations to a number of heads of states to visit Armenia in 2015 and especially on April 24, to join us in paying tribute to the memory of one and a half million innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide, to speak out against the crime of genocide in general and to state that the Armenian people has not only survived through this hardship but also took the road of rebirth. Not only did we survive but also managed to unite and pave the way for an independent statehood – free Armenia.

Official Ankara continues talking about establishing a committee of historians and disclosing the archives. First and foremost it is known that Armenian archives have always been open to the researchers who have been interested in the scientific aspects of the issue. The materials in scientific institutions and museums have also been available. However, the whole point is that there is no need of archival research to face the truth of the Armenian Genocide. It is just enough to enter any Armenian house, any family and the testimonies will touch the heart of any listener. It is enough to be present in Tsitsernakaberd on April 24 and perceive the counsel of the day for each Armenian, be they in Armenia or Diaspora. It is enough to visit any community of Diaspora and to ask how their ancestors have appeared there. If the Turkish authorities are interested in the truth they should arrive in Armenia and stand next to Armenian people on April 24. I don’t think they will be able to raise the idea of visiting archives then. Availing myself of this opportunity I officially invite the Turkish President, whoever will win the upcoming elections, to visit Armenia on April 24, 2015 and to face the vocal evidences of the history of the Armenian Genocide.

Mindful of all this, we do not feel hostile towards the Turkish people. Moreover, we try to lay grounds for Armenians and Turks to communicate to find the way to reconciliation. This is why we made efforts and we remain committed to normalization of relations with Turkey without preconditions and opening of the Armenian-Turkish borders, even though Turkey’s desire is only limited to statements. If the desire is indeed sincere, Turkey knows well enough the road to the Armenian-Turkish reconciliation.

Dear colleagues,

Let no one hope that the Armenian Genocide Centenary is the endpoint of our cause. It is a particular destination to mourn our sorrow, to become morally stronger and to achieve justice. The Armenian Genocide Centenary will give birth to renewed objectives, a new Pan-Armenian agenda and plans to build a more powerful statehood and more consolidated Diaspora. With the Centenary we will sum up a historical period and will herald a new phase of struggle for the restoration of justice.

We have an important message to the entire world: we will continue our fight for the recognition and condemnation of the crime against humanity – the Armenian Genocide- with new vigor, enthusiasm and determination,” said President Serzh Sargsyan.

Underlining that there are a few months left before 2015, the President urged to make the most of this representative meeting to exchange constructive ideas and present valuable proposals.

In the framework of the State Commission’s session, the political context of the Armenian Genocide Centenary was discussed. At the session, NKR President Bako Sahakyan, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Karekin II, the Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia Aram I, Catholic Patriarch Nerses Petros XIX of the House of Cilicia , the Chairman of the Armenian Evangelical World Council Hovel Mikayelyan, the President of the Constitutional Court of Armenia Gagik Harutyunyan, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandian, representatives of the traditional parties – the ARF, the DLP, the SDHP, as well as leaders of the largest Pan-Armenian structures made statements touching upon the fundamental approaches the Commission aims to include in the text of the Pan-Armenian Declaration to be adopted on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

The second item on the agenda referred to works implemented by local bodies and to coming programs. Reports were made by the Minister of Diaspora Hranush Hakobyan, as well as by the committee representatives of the largest local structures in Russia, US, Lebanon, France and Argentina.

The commission members and the other participants listened to the report of the Commission’s Secretariat on the multi-dimensional activities carried out since the previous session, as well as on the current organizational works, discussed the proposals made to the State Commission and the 2015 events program.

The participants of the session were also presented the logo of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Forget-Me-Not Flower, designed by a working group established by the State Commission. The etymology of the flower’s name in different languages shows that it conveys the same meaning – “REMEMBER!” The latter is exactly the main message of the 100th anniversary. The working group chose such a logo because its color range is associated with the main motives underlying the concept of the mentioned date, and finally, in the Middle Ages Forget-Me-Not was considered the symbol of God’s presence. Five leaves of the flower symbolize the five continents where the Genocide survivors found shelter being deprived of the opportunity to live in their homeland. The flower has four main colors: violet, light violet, yellow and black. Each color conveys a certain meaning. The color of black symbolizes horror and the memories of the Genocide. The inner light violet stands for a unifying idea. The color of violet is suggested as the main color of the symbol. It is widely used in vestments worn by the priests of the Armenian Apostolic Church which is a basis of Armenians’ self-consciousness. The yellow color symbolizes the sunlight which gives a hope to live and create. It is represented by cyclically ordered 12 stylized pillars symbolizing the Genocide Memorial.

He’s all right! Paul McCartney leaves Japan after recovering from serious virus that left him in hospital

Փոլ Մաքարտնի

Former Beatle Paul McCartney has left Japan after recovering from a viral infection that forced him to pull out of his Asian concert tour.

The 71-year-old left on a charter flight on Monday with Japanese media reporting he had headed for London.

McCartney was hit by the mystery bug on May 16 – just one day after he landed in Japan ahead of his Out There tour.

He called off the sold-out Japan tour, much to the disappointment of fans – some of whom had paid 100,000 yen ($980) to see him.

McCartney was also scheduled to perform at a Seoul stadium on May 28. It would have been his first concert in South Korea.

Today the concert organisers said in a statement: ‘Paul McCartney himself hopes to return to Japan for more concerts as soon as possible.’
His wife Nancy Shevell, 53, was by his bedside.

Paul is due to begin a U.S. tour on 14 June, which will consist of 18 concerts, leading to a gig at Candlestick Park stadium, the site of the Beatles’ last public show in 1966.

China to Take 6 Million Older Vehicles off Roads

չինաստան

China’s government plans to take 6 million older, polluting vehicles off the road this year in an effort to revive stalled progress toward cleaning up smog-choked cities.

The plan also calls for filling stations in Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities to switch to selling only the cleanest grades of gasoline and diesel, according to a Cabinet statement issued Monday.

The order comes after China failed to meet official pollution-reduction goals for 2011-2013, the statement said. It said vehicles registered before 2005 that fail to meet cleaner emissions standards will be “phased out,” though it did not say how.

It called the country’s environmental situation “extremely grim.”

China’s major cities are smothered in eye-searing smog. The country has some of the world’s strictest emissions standards, but authorities have refrained from enforcing them until now to avoid forcing older, pollution-belching trucks off the road and hurting small businesses.

China has about 240 million vehicles on the road, and half are passenger cars, according to the Ministry of Public Security.

At least 25,000 homes have been destroyed by the flood waters and at least 440,000 people have been displaced, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a statement on its website.

More thunderstorms were forecast for Guangdong on Tuesday.

China’s worst floods in recent history were in 1998, when 4,150 people died, most of them along the Yangtze River, China’s mightiest.

When the military police of Como arrived at the property the man allegedly threatened them with the bottle, but officers quickly overpowered him.

More than 100 children and babies rescued from Sicily-bound fishing boat in middle of Mediterranean crammed with nearly 500 migrants from Syria, Egypt and Bangladesh

միգրանտներ

The Italian navy rescued nearly 500 people, including more than 100 children, in an all-night operation yesterday as the immigrants tried to cross from Africa into Europe.

The operation began as 133 children along with 74 women were brought aboard two navy vessels Monday evening from two fishing boats tethered together off Sicily.

The rescue then had to be suspended due to rough waters, the navy said. The remaining migrants, 281 men, were thrown life preservers and rescued on Tuesday.

Most were from Syria, Egypt and Bangladesh, the navy said.

There has been an enormous jump this year in the number of migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe.

Of the 26,644 migrants who arrived in Italy through April 30 this year, 3,848 were children and 2,744 of those were unaccompanied.

That compares with 3,362 arrivals in the same period last year, including 522 unaccompanied minors and 58 children with families.

The U.N. estimates that over 170 people have died at sea trying to reach Europe so far this year.
