Chinese pensioner suffers third-degree burns after static electricity from clothes he was putting on causes gas explosion felt 300 yards away

Chinese man

A Chinese man was badly burned after static electricity from his clothes ignited fumes from a gas leak at his home as he dressed.

Wen Chung suffered second and third degrees to his face, neck and hands in an explosion at his home in Jiangdu, in eastern China, that his nephew said could be felt 300 metres away.

The 78-year-old is being treated for injuries at the Northern Jiangsu People’s Hospital that his relatives say were partly caused during his attempts to put the fire out.

The initial explosion burnt his face, then Mr Chung sustained further injuries to his hands as he desperately tried to stop the flames spreading.
Mr Chung’s nephew told The Global Times: ‘The power of the explosion was very strong. You could feel the blast within a 300-meter radius.

Safety officials believe that static electricity from Mr Chung’s clothes ignited fumes that had been leaking from a faulty pipe.

Pope has a message for global elite

պապ ֆրացիսկ

For the first time, an address from the leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics will be read out to the political and business elite at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Tuesday.

The event sees global leaders congregate to discuss pressing world issues.

Since taking up his post in March 2013, Pope Francis has been outspoken about the problem of income equality, a central topic of this year’s conference.

The papal address comes on the heels of an Oxfam report that found 85 of the world’s richest people now own nearly half of the world’s wealth.

Pope Francis has wasted no time in reaching out to global decision-makers. He issued a public letter to G20 leaders in September, urging them to develop “a global financial framework with its own just and clear rules … to achieve a more equitable and fraternal world.”

The brunt of the storm is expected to slam the Washington, D.C. – Philadelphia – New York corridor with heavy snow and brutally cold temperatures.

Coastal areas are on high alert for blizzard conditions which will set in from Tuesday afternoon into the evening.

Conditions are not expected to be as brutal as the ‘polar vortex’ three weeks ago but most of the U.S. will still face a significant drop in temperature.

To the Southwest, California and adjoining regions can expect continued problems from the historic drought already plaguing the region.

The dry conditions statewide led Governor Jerry Brown to formally declare a drought on Friday in order to seek federal assistance.

Iran begins to halt uranium enrichment as landmark nuclear deal goes into effect

րոհանի

Iran started suspending high levels of uranium enrichment Monday as an interim deal struck with six world powers went into effect, state media reported, making way for more talks and less financial sanctions.

The nation stopped enrichment of uranium to the 20% purity level and disconnected cascades of centrifuges enriching uranium in Natanz, a top nuclear official told Press TV.

International inspectors were present when Iran started implementing the historic deal, Press TV said.

The action is part of a six-month interim agreement that gives Iran and six other countries — the United States, Britain, China, France, Russia and Germany — more time to negotiate a permanent solution.

Iran struck the deal with the nations on November 24 in exchange for lighter sanctions.

If all conditions are met, Iran will get sanctions relief totaling about $7 billion, including access to $4.2 billion in frozen assets, during the six months the interim deal is in effect.

Hollande: French First Lady on the Mend, Resting

Francois Hollande - Valerie Trierweiler

France’s  President Francois Hollande says his first lady is recovering at a state residence at Versailles after being hospitalized over a report that he is having an affair with an actress.

The story has drawn widespread attention abroad, and overshadowed Monday’s visit to the Netherlands, his first foreign trip since the report.

Hollande told reporters that Valerie Trierweiler is “doing better” but refused to respond to a question from The Associated Press on his personal life. Trierweiler was hospitalized with what aides called extreme shock after the report earlier this month.

Hollande has never married, and the reported affair with actress Julie Gayet has prompted questions about whether Trierweiler will stay in the state-financed office of first lady. Neither Hollande nor Gayet has denied the affair.

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL MESSAGE FOR YEAR OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHY

This year marks the centenary of the birth of modern crystallography.  We celebrate 100 years of ground-breaking advances.

Crystallography is fundamental to understanding the structure of matter.

It is critical for materials science, health care, agriculture and biotechnology.

Today, crystallography is at the core of structural sciences, revealing the constitution of minerals and the molecules of life, helping scientists to design new-generation materials and life-saving medicine.

In recognition of these important contributions, the United Nations General Assembly designated 2014 as the  International Year of Crystallography.  The goal is to raise awareness about the power of crystals, deepen cooperation and create new partnerships across the globe.

Crystallography has an important place as we work for inclusive sustainable development — policies that are good for people and the planet.

I thank UNESCO, along with the International Union of Crystallography and all other partners.

Thank you for working to help societies harness the full power of sciences for sustainable development.  Let us make the Year a great success!

Argentina: 10 Injured in Carnivorous Fish Attack

գիշատիչ ձկներ

Attacks by a school of carnivorous fish have injured at least 10 people bathing in an Argentine river since Thursday.

The attacks took place in the Parana River in Rosario some 300 kilometers (186 miles) northeast of Buenos Aires. Seventy people who were cooling off from high temperatures were also injured there in late December by the same piranha-like fish.

palometas

The latest attack by the “palometas” was confirmed Saturday. They’ve been described by the local director of lifeguards as “a type of piranha, big, voracious and with sharp teeth that can really bite.”

Media reports said the injured included a boy who suffered a foot wound while floating in the river.

Experts say unusually high temperatures during the Austral summer and lower numbers of species such as caiman that preyed on the fish could be causing the attacks.

Turkmenistan to Make People Pay for Gas

Գուրբանգուլի Բերդիմուհամեդով

The president of Turkmenistan says his government will begin installing gas meters in households, ending the unlimited supply of free gas to citizens in this energy-rich Central Asian nation.

President Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov said during a televised address on Saturday that the government hoped the meters would encourage people to consume energy in a more “economical” way.

The nation is estimated to have the world’s fourth-largest natural gas reserves, and gas, electricity and water have been supplied free to households since 1993.

When Berdymukhamedov became president in 2006, he pledged to extend that policy until 2030.

He has ruled with an iron fist, allowing no dissent or independent media in the predominantly Muslim nation of five million.

The stench of scandal: Activist unloads tonnes of horse manure in front of France’s parliament building in protest at Hollande

President Hollande

For Francois Hollande, it would be fair to say the proverbial has hit the fan this week.

As if allegations the French president had a secret affair with an actress were not enough, several tonnes of horse manure have been dumped at the steps of his nation’s parliament.

Gendarmes apprehended a protestor before he could finish unloading a white articulated lorry full of dung outside Paris’s National Assembly today, witnesses said.

On the side of the truck was daubed a slogan: ‘Out with Hollande and the entire political class. Long live the SixthRepublic.’

The present-day FifthRepublic was founded in 1958 with Charles de Gaulle its first president after France lost much of its colonial power after the Second World War.

The pungent demonstration happened today outside the Bourbon Palace, a 16th Century monument next to the river Seine in central Paris which houses France’s lower house of parliament, the equivalent of the House of Commons.

Witnesses said the man was apprehended by police, who have since begun a mass clean-up.

The French magazine Closer published a seven-page report last Friday on Mr Hollande’s alleged affair with the actress Julie Gayet.

West Criticizes Kiev for Anti-Protest Laws

Ukrainian leaders are under fire from the West for passing sweeping anti-protest laws amid anti-government demonstrations that have rocked Kiev for nearly two months.

Despite noisy protests from the opposition, the Ukrainian parliament, dominated by President Viktor Yanukovych’s loyalists, passed a flurry of legislation Thursday that significantly curbs the rights to protest, free speech and the activity of non-governmental organizations.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said Friday she is “deeply concerned” by the new laws and called on Yanukovych to revise them. The bills have yet to be signed by the president. The U.S. State Department called the laws “undemocratic” and said they contradict Ukraine’s aspiration to a European future.
