Brazil Has 100 Days to Get Ready for World Cup

աշխարհի գավաթ

Brazil is running out of time.

World Cup organizers will mark 100 days to go on Tuesday with work still to be done on stadiums and infrastructure in the 12 host cities.

As national teams enter their final phase of preparations — Wednesday in the only date this year before mid-May that all players are available to national teams — the Brazilian government is trying to ensure the country will be prepared for the 32-nation tournament, which opens June 12.

There are four stadiums still under construction, and work outside many of the venues is far from over. Doubts also remain about whether host cities will be able to meet FIFA’s requirements for fan areas with outdoor viewing screens.

US urges Israel to stop assassinating Iranian nuclear scientists and focus on the Palestine peace process

US officials have reportedly told Israel to stop killing off Iranian nuclear scientists.

Israel Moussad spy agancy has supposedly taken out at least five top Iranian nuclear experts in an attempt to slow the country’s nuclear program and continues to do so despite recent agreements reached to end the country’s nuclear ambitions.

The brazen hits were carried out using mostly car bombs, and the assassins were never captured, CBS News revealed Sunday in a shocking report as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flew to Washington.

An unidentified US official disclosed the program to CBS while claiming the Obama administration is leaning on its Middle Eastern ally to stop the targeted killings and wait for the current deal to disarm to play out.
Netanyahu’s visit to the US capital is also expected to touch upon Israel – Palestine peace talks, and where the two nations stand on Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

At ICJ, Croatia Accuses Serbia of Genocide

Croatia is accusing its Balkan neighbor Serbia of genocide during fighting in the early 1990s as the former Yugoslavia shattered in spasms of ethnic violence, in a case at the United Nations’ highest court that highlights lingering animosity in the region.

Croatia is asking the International Court of Justice to declare that Serbia breached the 1948 Genocide Convention when forces from the former Federal Republic of Yugoslavia attempted to drive Croats out of large swaths of the country after Zagreb declared independence in 1991.

It is not the first time Serbia has faced allegations of genocide at the world court. In a landmark 2007 judgment, the court cleared Belgrade of committing genocide in the 1995 massacre of some 8,000 Muslim men in the Bosnian enclave of Srebrenica.

Culture

Easily grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. Prefers moist, humusy soils in part shade. Grows particularly well under deciduous trees where exposure to the sun is full in early spring but gradually changes to part shade as the trees leaf out. Also prefers cool climates, and is somewhat short lived when grown south of USDA Zone 7. Plant bulbs 2-3” deep and space 2-3” apart in fall. In optimum growing conditions, it naturalizes well by both self-seeding and bulb offsets. Allow foliage to yellow before removing it from garden areas. If left alone, foliage disappears by late spring as bulbs go dormant.

Noteworthy Characteristics

Galanthus nivalis, commonly called snowdrop, is a bulbous perennial that is native to Europe and southwestern Asia. It has escaped gardens and naturalized in parts of eastern North America. It is a true harbinger of spring that typically blooms from late February to late March in the St. Louis area, often poking its head up through snow cover if present. The common name refers to the supposed resemblance of the flowers to drops of snow. Each flower has six tepals (three spreading outer tepals and three shorter inner tepals).

Galanthus comes from the Greek words gala meaning milk and anthos meaning flower.

Nivalis means snowy.

Problems

No serious insect or disease problems.

Garden Uses

Best massed in sweeping drifts in areas where they can naturalize, such as woodland margins or in lawns under large deciduous trees. Also effective in groupings in rock gardens, border fronts, in front of flowering shrubs or along walks or paths. Mix with other early flowering bulbs such as Eranthis (winter aconite).
