The answers of Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian to the questions at the National Assembly

նալբանդյանը կառավարության նիստում

Tevan Poghosyan: On April 23 Turkish PM made a statement to which Yerevan responded that it was a new form of genocide denial. Obviously, I share your opinion. Indeed, it is very regrettable Erdoganthat there is such an Erdogansituation on the 99th anniversary. Nevertheless after your response Erdoğan Erdogankeeps talking and admiring his own statement.  Moreover, on April 29 he made an “heroic” statement that the proof that no genocide was committed is that the Armenians are living in Turkey today. There has been no answer from our side on this claim. What is your opinion on that?

Edward Nalbandian: Today a large number of Jews live in Germany, but  no one would dare to put under the question the reality of the Holocaust. Turkey had better follow Germany’s example through recognition, condemnation and apology.
In 1915 Talaat told Germany’s Consul General that there is no Armenian question because there are no more Armenians. 99 years later Armenians together with the international community struggles for the exclusion of new genocides, new crimes against humanity and wait for civilized steps from Turkey.

Tevan Poghosyan: Thank you. Taking the opportunity of your presence, I would also like to  hear your opinion on the following matter. Azerbaijan assumes presidency in the CoE in a few days. During the last few days we can see the situation on human rights in that state,  and how many representatives of NGOs have been arrested, accused and beaten. As a Foreign Minister of a state that presided the Organization what is your view on that? Are you going to raise that issue in the Council of Europe? What actions do you plan to undertake?

Edward Nalbandian: Council of Europe senior officials have already raised that issue. During the last week CoE Commissioner for Human Rights made two statements, according to which the situation with the fundamental freedoms, particularly freedom of speech and in general human rights is deteriorating in Azerbaijan.

We are well aware that expressions of Armenophobia,  intolerance, hate speech have become usual phenomenon in Azerbaijan.

I think that not only a CoE chairmanship of such a country, but also its membership are not to the honour of the Organization.

After the Q&A session at the Parliament, answering the correspondent’s question whether Armenia raises at the Council of Europe the issue of the expressions of armenophobia in Azerbaijan, Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said, “Yes, we do. However, those expressions are so gross, that are obvious and apparent.
For instance, what does the yesterday’s statement by the Azerbaijani head of police mean, that the inhuman treatment of Leyla Yunus is justified by her supposed Armenian origin. Such numerous expressions are well known in the Council of Europe, as well as in other Organizations.

ukraine-EU-sanctions

The European Union has imposed sanctions related to the crisis in Ukraine on another 15 people, bringing the total number targeted to 48.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said she was alarmed by the worsening security situation in eastern Ukraine, and she called on Russia to take “concrete steps” in support of an international deal signed this month aimed at easing tensions.

She warned that if necessary, the European Union “will look at possible additional individual measures” related to the crisis.

Jordan Opens Syria Refugee Camp for 130,000 People

Jordan opened a new, sprawling tent city on Wednesday to accommodate tens of thousands more Syrian refugees who are expected to flee their country’s fighting — another grim indicator for a deadly war now in its fourth year.

camp-syriaThe new Azraq refugee camp is built to host 130,000 people, said Brig. Gen. Waddah Lihmoud, director of Syrian refugee affairs in Jordan. It cost $63.5 million dollars to build, the U.N. said.

Once full — a process expected to take months — the camp will outstrip Zaatari, currently Jordan’s largest camp.

Jordan already hosts some 600,000 registered Syrian refugees, forming 10 percent of the country’s population. Jordanian officials estimate the real number is closer to 1.3 million Syrians.

Iran Wants 400 New Planes by 2025 If Sanctions End

ինքնաթիռ

Iran’s top civil aviation official says the Islamic Republic wants to buy 400 new passenger airplanes by 2025 to replace the country’s aging fleet if sanctions over its contested nuclear program are lifted.

Ali Reza Jahangirian of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization told journalists Wednesday that 40 percent of Iran’s commercial airliners have been grounded due to a lack of spare parts. Under terms of interim nuclear deal made in November with world powers, Iran can now import some airplane parts.

Jahangirian did not discuss dollar figures or financing for the future purchases. He did say Iran received “very positive signals” from Boeing Co. and General Electric Co. about getting new spare parts.

Armenians Should Thank Erdogan for… NOT Recognizing the Genocide

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

Thecaliforniacourier.com

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan’s statement on the ‘events of 1915’ released in nine languages last week was a major propaganda coup for Turkey, generating worldwide publicity. The announcement was so cleverly crafted that it fooled many in the international community — and regrettably, some Armenians — into believing that he came close to recognizing the Armenian Genocide or at least took ‘an historic’ step in the right direction.

In reality, Erdogan’s statement was nothing more than rephrased denial or old wine in a new bottle. Carefully avoiding the term ‘Armenian Genocide,” he conveniently borrowed Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s deceptive terminology of ‘shared pain’ and ‘just memory,’ words that sound conciliatory, but actually equate the murderers with the victims. The Turkish Prime Minister’s reference to millions of Turks and others who also died during World War I is an insult to the memory of the 1.5 million victims of the Armenian Genocide. Millions of Germans also perished in World War II, but no one in their right mind and good conscience would equate their deaths with the extermination of six million Jews!

Erdogan’s call for a “joint historical commission to study the events of 1915” is another worn out and shrewd delay tactic. If Turkish officials are sincere in wanting to learn the facts of the Armenian Genocide, all they have to do is review the extensive documentation available in their own archives as well as studies conducted by countless historians and genocide scholars around the world. Why did the Turkish government wait for almost 100 years to show an interest in researching this topic? Why are some of the most sensitive Ottoman archives still kept under lock and key, not to mention those that were shredded long ago?

I have written many times for several years that:

1)    Despite Turkish denials, the Armenian Genocide is a recognized fact by the international community and there is no need to wait for Pres. Obama, Prime Minister Erdogan or anyone else to acknowledge it.

2)    Genocide recognition cannot right the wrongs committed by uprooting and decimating the Armenian people. A more appropriate objective would be to seek justice through legal channels, demanding restitution, both financial and territorial.

3)    The Turkish offer for ‘reconciliation’ is nothing but a sinister ploy to bury the past with a meaningless acknowledgment and apology. True reconciliation is achieved by undoing the enormous damage inflicted on the Armenian nation.

It is imperative that Armenians remain vigilant and not be deceived by fake Turkish offers of reconciliation. Between now and April 24, 2015, the Turkish government will probably announce many more publicity stunts to win over the sympathy of the international community and minimize the damage to Turkey’s already tarnished reputation by accusations of genocide.

One such Turkish plan is Davutoglu’s cynical statement that the Armenian Diaspora is also Turkey’s Diaspora! There have been media reports that the Turkish government is preparing to grant citizenship to the descendants of former Ottoman subjects, including Armenians. Surprisingly, some naïve Armenians are fooled into thinking that this is a positive step! Just imagine settling in one of the towns of Turkish-occupied Western Armenia or Cilicia as a citizen of Turkey, and having your sons drafted into the Turkish military to ‘defend the Turkish nation’ and take part in the invasion of Kessab or Aleppo or even Armenia! How about being jailed, under article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code, because you made the mistake of speaking about the Armenian Genocide to one of your Turkish neighbors!

Erdogan’s real intent in issuing his April 23, 2014 statement is to undermine the worldwide Armenian efforts to seek justice as they prepare for the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

The fact that the State Department and some European officials reacted positively to Erdogan’s statement is an indication that this was a coordinated attempt to provide cover for the Obama administration and European countries not to deal with the Armenian demands on the genocide issue, using the excuse that Turkey’s leaders are in the process of reconciling with Armenians.

Armenians should resist the pressures by third parties to abandon the pursuit of their historic claims. The views of the US government or the EU on Armenian demands from Turkey should be irrelevant. Armenians should be the masters of their own fate and not allow other nations to dictate what is acceptable or unacceptable to them in the pursuit of their national interest.

Rihanna Is Sued for Defamation by Former Bodyguard

A former bodyguard for Rihanna has filed a lawsuit against the singer. As reported by TMZ, the man called Geoffrey Keating from Dublin filed the lawsuit in Ireland’s High Court on Monday, April 28, claiming that the “Stay” hitmaker made “nauseatingly offensive” statements about him in email exchange to his partner in July. Keating, who worked as the head of security for the singer between October 2012 and July 2013, said that her remarks ruined his reputation and business.

Keating’s attorney Gerald Kean was granted a motion to serve Rihanna with the lawsuit in the U.S. He told the site, “We’re taking this battle very seriously. We are satisfied that the Irish Courts will see justice at the end of the day.” Representative for Rihanna has not responded to request for comments.

Football fan waving flare is turned into a human FIREBALL when security guard tries to subdue him with pepper spray

Polish top division match1

Riot police accidentally turned a football fan into a human fireball after a flare he was holding burst into flames when they tear-gassed him.

The bizarre incident, which was caught on film, happened during crown trouble at a Polish top division match between Slask Wroclaw and Zaglebie Lubin.

The security officer who fired the gas at him presumably didn’t know that the two chemicals were combustible.

The supporter was spotted climbing onto a section of the fence surrounding the seats and police took action by firing the gas at him.

He then burst into flames, falls down the stairs, and then gets back up and runs back amongst the fans, apparently unhurt.

Obama: US to Levy New Russia Sanctions Monday

Seeking to ratchet up pressure on Vladimir Putin, President Barack Obama said the United States will levy new sanctions Monday on Russian individuals and companies in retaliation for Moscow’s alleged provocations in Ukraine.

Obama said the targets of the sanctions would include high-technology exports to Russia’s defense industry. The full list of targets will be announced by officials in Washington later Monday and are also expected to include wealthy individuals close to Putin, the Russian president.

White House officials say they decided last week to impose additional penalties after determining that Russia had not lived up to its commitments under a fragile diplomatic accord aimed at easing the crisis in Ukraine.

Government Keeps Promise: Funded Pension Bill Is In National Assembly

կառավարոության նիստ

A Cabinet sitting was held today, chaired by Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan. The government approved a bill on suspension of Article 76 of the Funded Pension Law. The aforementioned article shall be suspended until the enactment of the legislative package to ensure full enforcement of the Constitutional Court’s April 2, 2014 ruling.

Under the applicable law, in case of failure to make a mandatory retirement payment within the established deadlines, the citizen will have to pay a statutory penalty of 0.15 percent for each day of default. With the next decision, the above bill was recognized as urgent and will be submitted to the National Assembly in the manner established by law.

The Prime Minister noted in this regard, “We discussed this issue with all political forces, including the political parties represented in the National Assembly, as well as all the interested non-governmental organizations. We have tried to understand the public’s concerns and dissatisfaction associated with the pension reform. Today I have had my position and considerations posted on the Government’s website. I have issued a statement which clearly states the Government’s position. I would like you to get acquainted with my statement.” (See here).

The Government approved a set of legislative amendments to the law on alternative tax audits in the Republic of Armenia and about a dozen other legal acts in an effort to introduce alternative tax audit and horizontal monitoring systems.

Prioritizing the importance of the Bill, Hovik Abrahamyan considered it necessary to introduce its details to both the business community and the public at large. In this context, he reminded that the improvement of the business environment is among the Government’s key priorities.

The Government next approved a draft law on amendments to the Customs Code in order to ensure compliance with Paragraph 17 of the timetable set out in the roadmap of Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space between the Republic of Belarus, Kazakhstan and Russia.

The draft law is expected to have a ten-digit FEA classification system in line with the requirements of the January 25, 2008 treaty on Unified Customs Tariff Regulation. The draft law is expected to come into force on the day of signing the instrument of Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union.

The meeting next approved a bill on amendments to the Customs Code of the Republic of Armenia. The bill seeks to create effective customs control mechanisms through a system of risk management, preliminary and mandatory information processing, provisioning and simplified customs procedures introduced by the customs authorities.

The above-mentioned draft laws will be submitted to the National Assembly in the prescribed manner.

That will brake the bank: California company launches SOLID GOLD bike with alligator-hide seat, stingray-skin water bottle… and a million-dollar price tag

Ոսկուց հեծանիվ

This million dollar bike made out of solid gold is certainly set to ‘brake’ someone’s bank account.

The cycle, which also boasts an alligator-hide seat and a stingray-skin water bottle has gone on the market for a hefty $1million (£600,000).

The one of a kind mountain bike made from 24-carat gold has been created by The House of Solid Gold, a U.S. company based in California.

The flash two-wheeler is covered almost entirely in gold, and comes complete with a customized seat cover crafted from brown alligator hide, as well as a unique water bottle coated in solid gold and decorated with stingray skin.
It took a painstaking 750 hours to handcraft the elaborate bike, which also features the artist’s signature.

But despite the high price-tag, potential buyers might be happy to know proceeds from the bike will go to a good cause.

The 57-year-old entrepreneur added: “The price tag on the bike is only so high because most – if not all – of the proceeds will be donated to charity.

Address by President Serzh Sargsyan on remembrance day of Armenian Genocide victims

Սերժ Սարգսյան

Dear compatriots,

Today we bow to the memory of the innocent victims of the Armenian Genocide. One and a half million Armenians fell prey to such a crime which did not have a name at that time. Nor had a human language coined such an expression or a term yet. They were killed simply because they were Armenians. The crime designed minutely and in advance pursued a clear goal: to take possession of the home country, the property and the millennium-old heritage by exterminating the native people living there. By this they committed a monstrous crime seeking to once and forever annihilate Armenians as a political factor.

Today, nearly a hundred years after the Genocide, it is obvious that we as a nation were not ready to undergo those hardships neither psychologically nor in terms of an organization degree. Up until now, all the parts of Armenian people and all generations have known what the outcomes of the Genocide feel like. It is true. However, the reality is that we have built our state and today, in contrast to the past, we are ready to confront such calamities both psychologically and in terms of an organization degree especially in our homeland. Nowhere in the world is as safe for an Armenian as it is under the auspices of his own state.

Dear compatriots,

The 24th of April is just a symbolic date: it is clear that the Armenian Genocide was not initiated and put an end in one day. Moreover, it is alive as far as the successor of the Ottoman Turkey continues its policy of utter denial. We are convinced that the denial of a crime constitutes the direct continuation of that very crime. Only recognition and condemnation can prevent the repetition of such crimes in the future.

Today, we stand on the threshold of the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. This can afford Turkey a good chance to repent and to set aside the historical stigma in case if they make efforts to set free their state’s future from this heavy burden.

At the same time, I publicly reaffirm: we do not consider the Turkish society as our enemy. Bowing to the memory of the innocent victims we remember all those Turks, Turkish families who lent a helping hand to their Armenian neighbors, friends being annihilated by the barbarians and helped numerous Armenian children escape from the clutches of the mob. God bless the memories of those who gave plenty of our compatriots a helping hand by risking even their and their families’ lives. Every society including Turks should be proud of their ancestors who rescued lives and threw down the gauntlet to the Genocide. We remember this.

We express our gratitude to all the countries and peoples who granted asylum to our compatriots having had a narrow escape from the Genocide. Armenian people will remember this forever. Our sisters and brothers have kept showing their gratitude for decades by becoming devoted citizens of those hospitable countries.

Today, the Armenians of Syria have got into trouble. This is our open wound and the issue of our primary concern. We do our best to re-establish peace for Syrian people and our compatriots of Syria.

Dear compatriots,

We are approaching the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide with a straightening back, open-faced and having a state whose name is the Republic of Armenia. It is the homeland of entire Armenians who despite the decade-old illegal blockade and the “neither war nor peace” reality continue to make progress.

The year 2015 should convey a strong message to Turkey. The attitude toward Armenia can no longer be measured by words because it presumes clear steps: the opening of the closed borders and the establishment of normal relations. Our position on the Armenian-Turkish protocols has not changed and the idea of “reasonable terms” is becoming more urgent than ever.

Justin Bieber apologized Wednesday to those he offended by visiting Japan’s Yasukuni war shrine this week, saying he was misled to see it as only a place of prayer.

The Shinto shrine in Tokyo honors 2.5 million war dead, including 14 convicted war criminals. China and South Korea in particular see Yasukuni as a symbol of Japan’s past militarism and see visits to it as a lack of understanding or remorse over wartime history.

Two photos posted late Tuesday and subsequently removed from Instagram showed Bieber praying outdoors at the shrine and standing beside a Shinto priest. The images outraged China as well as many commenters on Instagram and Twitter.

In a new Instagram post Wednesday evening, Bieber said he asked his driver to stop when he saw the shrine.

Afghan Election Commission Delays Vote Results

afghanistan-electionAfghanistan’s election commission has delayed a planned release of full results from the April 5 presidential election to allow for recounts and audits.

Wednesday’s announcement increases confusion surrounding the balloting to replace President Hamid Karzai, who is ineligible for a third term.

The results were expected on Thursday but Independent Election Commission director Ziaulhaq Amarkhil says they would be postponed until at least Saturday to ensure they are not tainted by fraud. The preliminary results then must be investigated by a separate commission before being finalized by May 14.

So far, partial results of about half the 7 million votes cast show former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah in the lead and ex-finance minister Asraf Ghani Ahmadzai in second.

The residents had sought shelter in churches, mosques and hospitals when the rebels raided Bentiu town, the world body said in a statement.

Before the attacks, some rebel commanders broadcast messages on local radio warning certain groups to leave town, it said.
