Sword-wielding Sikhs clash at India’s Golden Temple during prayers to mark the deadly 1984 military assault at Amritsar

Sikh radicals1

A violent sword battle broke out at Sikhism’s holiest temple today during a special prayer ceremony to mark the government massacre that took place there 30 years ago.

At least six people were injured as dozens of Sikh radicals clashed with supporters of the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) at the revered Golden Temple, in Amritsar, Punjab State.

It is understood the scuffle erupted over who would speak first at the service, held to remember victims of military offensive Operation Blue Star that left hundreds dead on June 6, 1984, when soldiers stormed the compound in a bid to flush out separatist insurgents holed up in the temple.

Earlier today, hundreds had gathered at the temple to mark the massacre’s anniversary.

But proceedings took an ugly turn when Simranjeet Singh Mann, local head of Sikh political party Shiromani Akali Dal, and his supporters forcibly tried to deliver a speech from the temple’s rostrum.

The situation was made worse by the fact that police personnel are not permitted inside the Golden Temple.

Later on, the President of Armenia visited Grand Tobacco and Grand Candy companies which make part of Grand Holding. The president toured the workshops, familiarized with the investments made by the company being considered as one of the leading native manufacturers, as well as with its recent years’ works aimed at putting new modern workshops in action and increasing the factory’s production potential. Serzh Sargsyan was told that the companies making part of Grand Holding keep on successfully implementing all the programs and abide by Hrant Vardanyan’s business traditions. This is proved by the economic indicators of the first five months of this year. The executives assured that they plan to maintain the same growth rates throughout the whole year. The acquisition of new production lines by Grand Tobacco during 2014 will lead to the creation of 100-130 new jobs. At the other company of Grand Holding, Grand Candy, the President of Armenia was informed that the number of the company’s 410 types of products will increase at least by 15. Currently, Grand Candy employs 3100 workers whose number is going to increase by 150 by the end of this year. All in all, Grand Holding employs around 6500 people.

At the end of the tour, Serzh Sargsyan held a meeting with the leadership of Grand Holding. The president welcomed the steps being taken to promote the company and wished Grand Holding further successes.

Thousands in Nepal Hug Trees in World Record Bid

 ծառ գրկելու աշխարհի ռեկորդ

More than 2,000 people gathered in Nepal’s capital on Thursday in a bid to set a world record for the largest tree hug.

Parliament members, students, office workers and even Buddhist monks took part in the attempt, gathering at a park on the outskirts of Katmandu. They said they were trying to set the record to celebrate World Environment Day by spreading awareness about the importance of trees.

The previous Guinness World Record for most people hugging trees simultaneously was 936 people in Portland, Oregon, last July.

Participants on Thursday held trees for two minutes as volunteers beat drums at the National Martyrs and Peace Park, on the northeast edge of Katmandu.

Most of the participants were students in their school uniforms.

Iraq, Iran Top World’s Unhappiest Countries List

դժբախտ

Do you live in one of the world’s unhappiest places?

A new study released this week by Gallup cited Iran as the country with the highest negative emotions — a close second behind Iraq.

Just last month, six Iranians were arrested in the country for dancing to Pharrell’s “Happy” in the country’s capitol, Tehran. They have since been released.

Gallup measured negative emotions in 138 countries in 2013 by asking people whether they experienced a lot of anger, stress, sadness, physical pain and worry the previous day. Gallup compiles the “yes” results into a Negative Experience Index score for each country. The higher the score, the more pervasive negative emotions are in a country.

In another Gallup study ranking positive emotions, Paraguay ranks first in positive experiences, and Syria was the least likely country worldwide to report positive experiences.

Giving Iran a run for its money — at least as far as unhappiness is concerned — are these other countries:

  1. Iraq
  2. Iran
  3. Egypt
  4. Greece
  5. Syria
  6. Sierra Leone
  7. Cyprus
  8. Northern Cyprus
  9. Cambodia

Kerry Calls Syrian Presidential Vote ‘Meaningless’

Քերի

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says Syria’s presidential elections this week were “a great big zero” that won’t change anything.

He said Wednesday the vote was “meaningless, because you can’t have an election where millions of your people don’t even have an ability to vote.”

Kerry, who spoke during a one-day visit to the Lebanese capital, insisted that after the Syrian election, “the conflict is the same, the terror is the same, the killing is the same.”

Syrians in government-controlled areas voted Tuesday in a presidential poll all but guaranteed to hand President Bashar Assad another seven-year term. Voting did not take place in opposition-held areas.

Obama vows to stand with Ukraine as he meets President-elect

Օբամա, պորոշենկո

U.S. President Barack Obama voiced his support for Ukraine’s newly elected President and called for the international community to “stand solidly behind” him Wednesday, on a visit to Europe dominated by the crisis in Ukraine.

Obama’s meeting with President-elect Petro Poroshenko can be seen as a sign of U.S. support for the government in Kiev as it battles to quell a pro-Russia separatist uprising in Ukraine’s east.

The two leaders were expected to talk about much-needed financial and political support for Ukraine, as well as its security concerns in the face of Russia’s activities.

The U.S. President will head to Brussels, Belgium, later Wednesday for a meeting of the G7 group of industrialized nations.

German politician on country’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire uses his Phone A Friend to call Chancellor Angela Merkel… but she doesn’t pick up

When faced with a tricky question about East German washing machines, who should you call for help?

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to one politician appearing on the country’s celebrity version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’ last night.

Wolfgang Bosbach, the deputy leader of Ms Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union, was filmed using his ‘Phone A Friend’ lifeline to call his political ally twice on the TV quiz show.

But unfortunately for him, it appeared Ms Merkel was not playing along at home as she failed to pick up her phone both times.

Mr Bosbach, 61, had been left stumped by a question asking why the East German WM66 washing machine was so legendary.

Had he answered correctly, he would have won 500,000 euros (£407,000) to spend on good causes, according to The Local.

Mr Bosbach, who has been a Conservative German MP for 20 years, explained the Chancellor is ‘always happy to see me and hear my voice’, according to the BBC.

But after Ms Merkel’s phone went to voicemail for a second time, he joked that she was too busy ‘saving the world’.

Seconds later, Mr Bosbach decided to bow out of the show, broadcast on Germany’s commercial channel RTL, with 125,000 euros (£102,000).

Mr Bosbach, who joined the CDU parliamentary group in 1972, said he later received a text from the Chancellor asking him what he had wanted.

Ms Merkel then sent him another text, reading: ‘Ok whatever it was, warm greetings from am.’

Mr Bosbach said: ‘I’m not sure I would have done her a favour if she had answered the phone. I don’t know if she would have known the answer.’

Armenia Helps Coordinate Worldwide Genocide Centennial Activities

 Ցեղասպանության 100-ամյակ

By Harut Sassounian

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

Two important conferences took place in Yerevan last week in preparation for next year’s Armenian Genocide Centennial.

Participating in the first meeting, held on May 26, were representatives of Centennial Committees from 40 countries who reported on their plans for April 24, 2015. On this occasion, the emblem and motto for the Centennial were unveiled — “I remember and demand….”  The conference was a unique opportunity for the attendees to exchange contact information and discuss collaborative joint efforts.

The second meeting, held on May 27, brought together State Centennial Committee members, with representatives of the regional committees, and dozens of Armenian diplomats and high-ranking clergy from around the world. The State Committee consists of the leadership of Armenia and Artsakh (Karabagh), and heads of major Armenian organizations worldwide.

In a daring move, Pres. Sargsyan announced that he had invited the President of Turkey to visit Yerevan on April 24, 2015, in order to face the truth of the Armenian Genocide. Caught by surprise, Turkish officials have yet to respond to this challenging invitation. The Armenian President also informed the conference participants that he had invited several other heads of state to Yerevan on that date. French President Francois Hollande has already confirmed that he plans to be in Yerevan on the Genocide’s Centennial.

After presentations by State Committee members, representatives from Argentina, France, Lebanon, Russia, and the United States were given the opportunity to address the conference. I was also asked to speak in my capacity as Co-Chair of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of the Western United States.

I began by explaining that Armenians around the world should not be obsessed with the expectation that Pres. Obama would include the word genocide in his ‘memorial’ statement of April 24, 2015. Contrary to popular misconception, the United States government has repeatedly recognized the Armenian Genocide, starting in 1951 with an official document submitted to the World Court; House of Representatives resolutions in 1975 and 1984; and Pres. Ronald Reagan’s Presidential Proclamation of April 22, 1981. Consequently, there is no crucial need to insist that Pres. Obama also acknowledge the Armenian Genocide, save for the purpose of fulfilling his promise and sustaining his integrity.

In my talk I also suggested that since the Armenian Genocide lasted from 1915 to 1923, the planned Centennial activities should extend from 2015 to 2023. This would be a true nightmare for the Turkish government, having to confront not one, but eight years of Centennial events.

Since the Centennial is a historic milestone, I urged Armenian communities around the world to organize unique events which have a mass appeal and the potential of generating nationwide or worldwide publicity for Armenians’ just demands from Turkey. The same old annual events should not be repeated on the occasion of the Centennial. However, before initiating any project, it is incumbent on all Armenian communities to first agree on the objectives to be accomplished and decide whether the planned activities meet those goals.

I proceeded to read to the conference participants the mission statement of the Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee of Western United States:

“The 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide signifies a global demand for justice by Armenians worldwide and all people of good will.

The Centennial marks one of the 20th century’s greatest crimes against humanity. In 1915, the Turkish Government began a premeditated and systematic campaign to uproot the Armenian population from its ancestral homeland and slaughter 1.5 million defenseless men, women and children.

Turkey must finally acknowledge its responsibility for the Genocide and make appropriate moral, financial, and territorial restitution, as mandated by the fundamental norms of international law and civilized society.”

I concluded my remarks by suggesting that Armenians worldwide coordinate their Centennial activities so that the same message is delivered to friend and foe alike. I also proposed that the motto chosen by the State Committee be modified from “I remember and demand” to “We remember and demand justice!”

While this gathering should have been held much earlier, it was most useful in terms of coordinating the planned Centennial activities. Not surprisingly, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced last week that his government was closely monitoring the Centennial Committee’s Yerevan meetings. Fortunately, the organizers in Armenia were cautious not to make public the Centennial plans to keep Turkish officials in the dark, giving them as little time as possible to counter the Armenian initiatives!

‘Cleopatra’ Could Be Angelina Jolie’s Last Movie

angelina-jolie-photocall-maleficentAngelina Jolie has planned her retirement and “Cleopatra” is at the end of the line. In a new interview, the “Maleficent” star confirmed the long-rumored project about the Egyptian beauty that she has been attached to for years.

“For Cleopatra, we’ve been working on it,” Jolie told BBC radio. “There’s been lots of different ideas of directors and a lot of different discussions. The script has been written by Eric Roth, who is a dear friend and a brilliant writer.”

Talking about the role, the 38-year-old said, “She’s complicated, it’s complicated to get this one right. She’s complicated. But I think we’re getting there. It’s very close. So if we can pull it off…I imagine that the preparation for it is going to be big.”

Hinting at retirement, Jolie said, “It’s one of those [roles] you feel like maybe that’s the one you put everything into and that’s where you end it. That’s where you finish, in a great way. You kind of go, ‘What could you do beyond that one?’ Put it all into that one.”

Jolie previously revealed her intention to put her acting career to rest to focus on her humanitarian work and directing. She currently serves as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees campaigning against sexual violence in conflict.

Apocalypse Tehran: Moment Iranian capital was hit by 150km/h dust wall which blacked out sun, killed five and injured 30

թեհրան, փոթորիկ

These astonishing photographs show the apocalyptic scene of an 80mph dust storm which killed five people and injured 30 more.

The storm struck yesterday in Iran’s capital Tehran, blacking out the sun in a swirling cloud for several minutes and tearing down trees.

It also caused a chain-reaction crash involving 20 vehicles on a highway south of the capital – and international flights were cancelled.

Children and the elderly, as well as those with heart problems, were told to remain indoors – but some 50,000 homes suffered power cuts.

While sandstorms are common in many parts of the Middle East, ‘haboob’ storms like yesterday’s are unusual in Tehran.

Brad Pitt Talks About ‘Nutter’ Who Attacked Him on Red Carpet

Բրեդ Փիթ, 50-ամյակ

Brad Pitt broke silence on red carpet incident at the “Maleficent” premiere which took place on Wednesday, May 28. In a statement to PEOPLE, Pitt recalled the moments when an Ukrainian “nutter” Vitalii Sediuk approached him when he was signing autographs for fans.

Pitt was not injured following the incident, but a previous report suggested his glasses got broken. Sediuk, who previously targeted Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio and America Ferrera at other events, was ordered to stay away from Pitt and Angelina Jolie, do community service, undergo psychological counseling for one year, pay a fine, and was put on a 36-month probation.

Before Pitt released his statement, the former TV journalist also opened up about the red carpet incident, saying that reports of him punching the “12 Years a Slave” star were not true and that he was just trying to hug the actor. “I never hit, I never punched, I never slapped Brad Pitt in the face. This is absolutely false information,” he said, as reported by The Associated Press. “It is something that hurts not only me, but also my family.”

“I’m a normal guy. I’m not crazy,” the Ukrainian man said, adding that the red carpet prank was just “for fun.”

President Serzh Sargsyan held meeting with leadership of diplomatic service

big_1359955418_5816729Today, at Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex President Serzh Sargsyan held a meeting with the senior staff of the Armenian Foreign Affairs Ministry’s central apparatus and the heads of the Armenian diplomatic missions abroad, talked about the vital issues of our country’s foreign policy agenda.

“Enough time has passed since my last meeting with the leadership of the diplomatic service of the Republic Of Armenia despite the fact that you have regularly held regional meetings and I visited the MFA central apparatus 2 months ago. Besides, in recent times I have had numerous opportunities to hold meetings and talk with many of you. This gathering offers us a great chance to touch upon our foreign policy agenda, the traditional, as well as newly emerging international and regional challenges and the ways to respond them.

Unfortunately, I have to state that serious tendencies of instability can be noticed in the international arena. Tensions and uncertainties keep on increasing. It necessitates further improving the activities of our diplomatic missions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant bodies, as well as reinforcing inter-ministerial collaboration. A diplomat should be able to thoroughly examine, analyze and assess the situation, forecast future developments and offer solutions stemming from national interests. We often mention that human capital is the most valuable resource. Thus, an expectant and reactive diplomat who dodges his responsibilities is an inadmissible luxury for a state like ours. We expect you to be actively engaged in all the areas in which Armenia and Armenians have direct or indirect interests,” said the President of Armenia at the meeting with the leadership of the RA diplomatic service.

In his address, Serzh Sargsyan touched upon the urgent issues of the Armenian foreign policy agenda, the works carried out by the Foreign Affairs Ministry in a number of directions and the coming activities, the implementation process of the programs having strategic importance for our country, the existing challenges and the Ministry’s steps to respond to those challenges. Serzh Sargsyan also presented the current level of Armenia’s relations with partner countries and talked about their prospects. He touched upon the resolution process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in the format of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs and the present situation 20 years after the ceasefire was concluded. The president stressed the importance of diplomacy in the negotiation process and the everyday persistent work of each diplomat present at the meeting.

Serzh Sargsyan talked about the joint efforts and concerted works all Armenians should implement ahead of the Armenian Genocide Centenary, taking a comprehensive and thorough approach to that issue and the need of organizing the multifarious events dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Centenary at a high level.

In his address, the president touched upon regional issues, the Armenian-Turkish relations, the process of Armenia’s membership in the Customs Union and the economic relations.

Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of Armenia’s assistance to the large Armenian community of Syria who are running all the dangers of the Syrian crises and suffering the worst outcomes. The president highly praised the activities of the Armenian Embassy to Syria and the consulate-general which have rendered great assistance to the Armenians in Syria throughout this time and thanked the Armenian diplomats working in that country for their brave and devoted service.

The president spoke about the active measures being taken by our country to ensure regional and international security and underscored that Armenia performs its duties in a full-fledged manner prioritizing allied relations.

Serzh Sargsyan stressed the importance of activities aimed at consolidating the collaboration between Armenia and the European Union, as well as at further reinforcing and advancing the bilateral relations with European countries.

The President of Armenia drew the attention of the RA diplomatic service leadership to the need of reinvigorating the economic component of diplomacy. The president underscored that in order to attract foreign investments in our country, it is necessary to make the Armenian economy more popular and offer a chance to take the full advantage of making an investment in Armenia. In that context, Armenia’s decision to join the Eurasian Economic Union is of great importance.

Serzh Sargsyan also touched upon the quality of consular services and stressed that despite important reforms have been made in the consular sphere in recent years targeted at facilitating the procedures of rendering consular services to citizens, there are still a lot of works to do. The president assured that Armenian citizens are the first to assess each reform and innovation, and the primary indicator of consular services is measured only by their positive grades and satisfaction. According to the president, rendering quality services requires high quality human resources and there are works being implemented in that direction as well. Serzh Sargsyan highly emphasized the role of the Diplomatic School of Armenia in recruiting high quality personnel to our diplomatic service. Concluding his speech, the president wished the leadership of the diplomatic service successes and answered their questions.

Spain’s King Juan Carlos to abdicate throne

Խուան Կառլոս

After nearly 40 years on the throne, Spain’s King Juan Carlos will be stepping down, the country’s prime minister said Monday.

He did not say when Juan Carlos would abdicate because the government must now craft a law creating a legal mechanism for the abdication and for 46-year-old Felipe’s assumption of power.

The 76-year-old Juan Carlos oversaw his country’s transition from dictatorship to democracy but has had repeated health problems in recent years.

Spaniards generally hold the king in high regard for his service to the nation and his defense of democracy after the death of the dictator Francisco Franco in 1975 — especially the king’s decisive stand to halt a right-wing military coup in 1981.

Turkish Twitter user sentenced to 15 months for ‘humiliating religious values’ because he had ‘Allah’ in his handle

turkey-twitter-userA teacher in Turkey has been jailed for ‘humiliating religious values’ after he used the nickname ‘Allah C.C.’ on Twitter.

The user, named Ertan P, was accused by prosecutors in the eastern province of Muş of ‘writing harmful content’ for including the name of God and the Prophet.

The court rejected the defendant’s claim that his account was hacked and he was handed 15 months behind bars.

C.C. is the abbreviation of the honorific Arabic phrase ‘Celle Celaluhu’ which means, ‘[Allah’s] glory is so almighty.’ His handle, still live on Twitter, also included the Prophet’s name.

In March, Turkey’s prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan tried to ban Twitter altogether after some users posted links suggesting government corruption.

Mass migration one of the world’s ‘grave issues’ says Pope Francis who calls on governments to help them reach Europe and avoid any more tragedies

pope FrancisThe pope has urged governments to help migrants reach Europe, to avoid more tragic shipwrecks in the Mediterranean.

In a letter to the International Labour Conference, Francis said that mass migration was one of the ‘grave issues’ confronting our world today.

The letter follows two tragic shipwrecks in the Mediterranean earlier this month. A boat carrying hundreds of migrants sunk 100 miles off the coast of Italy, killing at least 18 with dozens more unaccounted for. A few days earlier 40 people drowned when a boat carrying 130 people sunk off the coast of Libya.
More than 40,000 have made the crossing in recent months often on overcrowded and unseaworthy boats. Italy says at least half a million more are awaiting a passage to Europe, in camps run by criminal gangs, on the coastline of Libya.
