The hunt for Misha: Bomb investigators search for mysterious ‘bald, red-bearded Armenian man’ accused of radicalizing Tamerlan

t3As the investigation into why and how the Boston bombers unleashed their deadly attacks continues, the focus has centered to an elusive and mysterious Muslim convert known only as Misha.

Family members of Tamerlan Tsarnaev describe Misha as the guiding influence in the elder bomber developing radicalized views – but to date it is believed that law enforcement and the media have failed to find him.

Speculation as to who Misha is wildly varies, with some suggesting he is the mastermind behind the marathon bombings while others think that he could be a Russian spy – sent to identify and keep tabs on young men like Tamerlan who are at risk of turning to militant Islam.

All that is known about him is that he is an Armenian man in his 30s with distinctive red beard and that he has disappeared – no longer living in the Cambridge, Massachusetts area.

However, family members have been telling reporters that in the years before the Boston marathon bombings, Tamerlan, 26, fell under the strong influence of a new friend, a Christian who converted to Islam and who steered the religiously apathetic young man towards adopting strong Islamic views.

Bankrupt Greece announces it IS pursuing claim against Germany for reparations for Nazi occupation

gr2Greece is planning to pursue a long-dormant claim for reparations from Germany over Nazi occupation during World War Two, it emerged today.

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos told parliament today that the government was willing to ‘exhaust every means available’ in its claim.

News of the debt-stricken country’s bid for reparations will add to the already strained relationship with Berlin, which foots most of the bill for Greece’s 240-billion euro rescue.

Germany, whose forces occupied Greece in World War Two, says it has already paid all reparations owed.

gr3Mr Avramopoulos said today that the Greek Finance Ministry has compiled a report after studying documents spanning more than six decades.

It will be submitted to Greece’s legal advisers and then Athens will decide how to officially press its claim, he said.

Mr Avramopoulos did not say how much would be sought.

Mr Avramopoulos said it was wrong to link the issue to the debt crisis.

Bizarre whirlpool appears in Latvian river sucking everything in its path into watery vortex

r1A monstrous whirlpool has appeared in the Baltic state of Latvia swallowing everything dragged towards it.

A seven-minute clip of what looks like a vortex in action was apparently captured after a river burst its banks in the south-east of the country.

It captures huge blocks of ice and mud heading towards the whirlpool before disappearing underneath the water’s surface.

More than 220,000 people have already watched the video in less than 48 hours on YouTube.

‘Does anyone else wanna throw on a scuba suit and see where this goes?’ asked one user.

Others commented it could be a sinkhole hidden underneath the river.

Military Says Guantanamo Hunger Strike Rises to 92

g1A U.S. military spokesman says the number of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay has been raised to 92 based on evaluations by medical personnel at the U.S. base in Cuba.

The new figure is up by eight prisoners from a day earlier and represents more than half of the 166 men held there.

Lt. Col. Samuel House says the military arrived at the new figure Wednesday because doctors have been able to evaluate the prisoners more closely after moving them to single cells out of a communal area. That move sparked a brief clash between guards and prisoners on April 13.

The woman was picking up her son from school when she got into a row with a shopkeeper after parking her electric bike in front of his store in the Meilan District of Haikou City, Hainan.

The 42-year-old man came out of the shop and told her she could not leave her bike their and the pair reportedly got into a shouting match.

Rescuers use massive strips of cloth as escape chutes after Bangladeshi textile factory collapses killing at least 96 people

b2An eight-storey building housing several garment factories collapsed this morning in Bangladesh, killing at least 83 people and trapping many more in the rubble.

Rescuers used massive strips of cloth as escape chutes from the textile factories to help the workers escape the devastation.

Fire fighters and army personnel worked frantically through the morning at the Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (19 miles) outside Dhaka, to rescue people trapped inside.

An official at a control room set up to provide information about the missing and injured said more than 700 people were injured.

The collapse happened about 8:30 a.m. and since garment factories in the area routinely work 24 hours a day, it appeared likely that the five housed in the building were staffed at the time.

Mohammad Asaduzzaman, in charge of the area’s police station, said factory owners appeared to have ignored a warning not to allow their workers into the building after a crack was detected in the block on Tuesday.

One fireman said that about 2,000 people were in the building when the upper floors jolted down on top of each other.

Buildings in the crowded city of Dhaka are sometimes erected without permission and many do not comply with construction regulations.

ANCA RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA’S REFUSAL TO HONOR HIS PLEDGE TO RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

ANCA RESPONDS TO PRESIDENT OBAMA'S REFUSAL TO HONOR HIS PLEDGE TO RECOGNIZE THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDEWASHINGTON, DC – Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) Executive Director issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s April 24th “Armenian Remembrance Day” message, which once against stops short of properly characterizing the crime as ‘genocide.’
“Sadly, President Obama chose today not to lead, but rather to follow Ankara’s gag-rule on his Administration’s condemnation and commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. His public retreat, under Turkish pressure, comes despite his own pledges to acknowledge this crime and our government’s record, dating back more than half a century, of having recognized the Armenian Genocide as a clear case of genocide.”
“Our President’s complicity in Turkey’s denial of truth and its ongoing obstruction of justice will not derail our progress toward a truthful, fair, and comprehensive international resolution of Turkey’s still unpunished crime against the Armenian nation.”
The full text of President Obama’s statement is provided below.
Statement by the President on Armenian Remembrance Day
Today we commemorate the Meds Yeghern and honor those who perished in one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. Ninety-eight years ago, 1.5 million Armenians were massacred or marched to their deaths in the final days of the Ottoman Empire. We pause to reflect on the lives extinguished and remember the unspeakable suffering that occurred. In so doing, we are joined by millions across the world and in the United States, where it is solemnly commemorated by our states, institutions, communities, and families. We also remind ourselves of our commitment to ensure that such dark chapters of history are not repeated.
I have consistently stated my own view of what occurred in 1915, and my view has not changed. A full, frank, and just acknowledgement of the facts is in all of our interests. Nations grow stronger by acknowledging and reckoning with painful elements of the past, thereby building a foundation for a more just and tolerant future. We appreciate this lesson in the United States, as we strive to reconcile some of the darkest moments in our own history. We recognize those courageous Armenians and Turks who have already taken this path, and encourage more to do so, with the backing of their governments, and mine.
The history and legacy of the Armenian people is marked by an indomitable spirit, and a great resiliency in the face of tremendous adversity and suffering. The United States is stronger for the contributions Armenian-Americans have made to our society, our culture, and our communities. In small measure we return that contribution by supporting the Armenian people as they work toward building a nation that would make their ancestors proud: one that cherishes democracy and respect for human liberty and dignity.
Today we stand with Armenians everywhere in recalling the horror of the Meds Yeghern, honoring the memory of those lost, and affirming our enduring commitment to the people of Armenia.

US team questions Boston suspects’ parents

4ՌԴ-ի Ամերիկյան դեսպանատան ներկայացուցչությունը հարցաքննել է ԲոստոնÕA delegation from the US embassy in Moscow interviewed the parents of the Boston marathon bombing suspects in the Russian North Caucasus region of Dagestan, but were told the two brothers had not contacted local Islamist groups, officials said Wednesday.

The parents of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev are currently living in Dagestan, an overwhelmingly Muslim region on the Caspian Sea where the family briefly lived before leaving for the United States.
“The FBI is receiving cooperation from the Russian government in its investigation of the Boston marathon bombing,” a US embassy official, who asked not to be named, told AFP.
“A group from the US Embassy in Moscow travelled to Dagestan yesterday (Tuesday) as part of this cooperation with the Russian government to interview the parents.”
The official declined to say whether the delegation was still in Dagestan and if the interviews had already taken place.
However a Dagestan security source told an AFP correspondent in its main city Makhachkala that interviews with both parents took place overnight and involved representatives of the FBI.

Original Australians numbered 1,000-3,000: study

բնիկAustralia was first settled by between 1,000 and 3,000 humans around 50,000 years ago, but the population crashed during the Ice Age before recovering to a peak of some 1.2 million people around five centuries ago, a study said on Wednesday.

Estimating the early population of Australia is a source of debate in anthropology, partly because it touches on how European colonisation affected the country’s indigenous people.

The newcomers crossed via a land bridge from Papua New Guinea, across a continental shelf that is now flooded, according to a common theory.

The numbers grew but then fell by as much as 60 percent between 21,000-18,000 years ago during the peak of the last Ice Age, when Australia became cooler and far drier than it is today, Williams believes.

President Serzh Sargsyan’s Address on the Genocide Remembrance Day

Սերժ Սարգսյան

Dear Compatriots,

Today, we bow to the memory of innocent victims. The great majority of these victims didn’t even have graves.

One of the native and most ancient peoples of the region had been exterminated on its own land or sent into forced exile.

One of the native and most ancient peoples of the region as a result of the first Genocide of the 20th century lost its spiritual and cultural assets accumulated through the millennia, which being national – Armenian, as the pieces of art and momentous achievements had also had the universal value.

Because of the Genocide, one of the native and most ancient peoples of the region had also lost material assets accumulated through the millennia which had been appropriated by the Turkish state and its peoples.

Because of the Genocide, one of the native and most ancient peoples of the region had lost its right and opportunity to live in its homeland.

Dear Compatriots,

It is our duty to realize and to bring the attention of the international community to the fact that denial of the Genocide constitutes direct continuation of that very crime and that very crime is being carried out in modern Turkey.

Some are trying to persuade us “not to re-open the hundred years old wounds but to look forward.” Our response to this counsel is the following: Orhan Pamuk and Hrant Dink were not brought to trial a hundred years ago. They were tried right before our eyes. For the Armenian, as well as for the Turkish society this problem is current and urgent.

Dear Compatriots,

Each April 24th is the opportunity to renew our pledge to be loyal to the Armenian statehood whose existence precludes and will continue to preclude the repetition of the Armenian Genocide. And we, as a state and as a nation, in every corner of the world have been and will be fighting against all and every manifestation of the most horrendous crime against humanity – genocide, be it xenophobia or extermination, nonchalant silence or denial. We will fight with fervor because our standing as the people who had survived compels us to.

Ministers To Shoulder Greater Responsibility

6696_ru_3 A Cabinet sitting was held today, chaired by acting Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan.

Pursuant to the President’s decree on 2013 spring call-up and demobilization campaign, the Government decided to set up a central military draft board to streamline conscription activities, as well as regional (including Yerevan) committees to provide for due coordination of the spring campaign in the regions. In addition, the Government approved the staffing of the central medical commission.

Based on the law on procurements, the Government amended one of its earlier decisions relating to the procurement procedure. Acting Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said the decision was adopted in compliance with the bid of numerous SNCOs and government agencies seeking authority to make direct procurements for up to one million dram worth of goods and equipment.

Another decision was adopted to establish technical specifications and maximum prices for some types of goods purchased by government department and public agencies.

Either this decision was commented on by the acting head of government. “All the ministers must keep this procedure under control as they are personally responsible for the problem. The Ministry of Finance has finalized the list of those articles we procure year by year – water, meat, pens, potatoes, fuel and so on. A stricter filter will henceforth be applied to determine the product types beyond which no procurements can be made. You will have to justify your choice, if you want to buy something specific, say a special kind of pen or paper. This is quite a tough arrangement as it rules out any purchase of goods at unreasonably high cost and puts the responsibility on the ministers.

The government established a procedure to follow while finalizing the citizens’ individual (personal) database, including for submittal of the 2012 data to the competent authority and incorporating them in the State pension system, as well as addressing inaccuracies in the applicable mechanisms.

The meeting approved the proposal on making redistributions in the loan agreement on Yerevan combined cycle power unit construction project, which was signed between the Government of Armenia and the Japanese Bank of International Cooperation in 2005.

The Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs was allocated over AMD 1.5mn for transfer to Armenia’s badminton and chess federations for participation in the first international school sports festival of CIS-member countries due to be held this April 21 to 27 in Moscow.

The Ministry was provided AMD28mn to make available to Armenia’s national archery federation for hosting the second round of the European Grand Prix in Echmiadzin from May 27 through June 1, 2013.

False Accusation Linking Armenian To Boston Bombings Should Be Condemned

Harut SassounianBy Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

Many unanswered questions remain in the wake of the barbaric Boston Marathon bombings last week.

In the absence of established facts, it is difficult to reach an informed conclusion and find a motive for the murderous actions of the Tsarnaev brothers — Tamerlan, 26, and Dzhokhar, 19. It is interesting to note that Tamerlan carries the name of a vicious 14th century Turkic warlord who razed entire cities to the ground and butchered millions of innocent people.

Instead of jumping to unwarranted conclusions and making generalizations about Chechens, Muslims, and the Tsarnaev family, some probing questions are in order:

— Back in 2011, when the Russian intelligence services asked the FBI to investigate Tamerlan’s radical Islamist ties and plans to join underground groups, how thoroughly did the FBI carry out this task? If the FBI agents did a thorough job and found nothing sinister, why did they not follow up a few months later when Tamerlan returned to the US in 2012, having spent six months in the troubled Russian republics of Chechnya and Dagestan? And why did US law enforcement agencies fail to investigate the Jihadist videos and links to radical Islamist websites found on Tamerlan’s computer?

— If the Russian tip was not seriously pursued by US officials, was their decision based on political considerations or a proper assessment of the risk of terrorism? Since Chechen insurgents were fighting Russia for independence, did US officials prefer not to meddle in an internal Russian conflict? Did the US view Chechen “terrorists” as “freedom fighters,” concluding that they represented no threat to the United States? More significantly, what role did the anti-Russian stance of influentialneo-conservative American circles play in assessing the warnings on Tamerlan?

— Did the Russian intelligence services thoroughly investigate Tamerlan when he fell in their lap while visiting Dagestan and Chechnya for six months, particularly if they were dissatisfied with the FBI’s lukewarm response to their earlier request?

— Would this terrorist act killing four Americans and injuring close to 200 now prompt US intelligence agencies to cooperate more fully with their Russian counterparts to jointly combat terrorism regardless of international political concerns?

— Will the US investigate the 10-day visit to Turkey in July 2003 by Tamerlan and three of his family members, as disclosed by Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler? What was the purpose of Tsarnaevs’ visit to Turkey and who were their contacts?

Turning to Ruslan Tsarni, the talkative uncle of the Tsarnaev brothers, who made controversial and contradictory comments disseminated worldwide by CNN, NBC, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and Time magazine, among others. Uncle Tsarni accused an unnamed Armenian convert to Islam in Cambridge, Mass., for radicalizing Tamerlan!

Tsarni, a Maryland resident, told the NBC Today show that one of his Armenian acquaintances informed him about an “outside influence” on Tamerlan: “He [the acquaintance] said, there is someone who brainwashed him [Tamerlan], some newly convert to Islam. I would like to stress [the acquaintance] was of Armenian descent.”

However, Uncle Tsarni, gave CNN a completely different explanation for the despicable actions of his nephews. He had accused them of being “losers,” claiming that they had brought shame on their family and the Chechen people. But, he later told NBC Today that he had called his nephews “losers” out of anger, and that he was now sure their crime had nothing to do with Russia or Chechnya. Tsarni also contradicted himself on CNN by claiming that the person who had “brainwashed” Tamerlan was the “new convert to Islam of Armenian descent,” not the acquaintance!

The question is, who is Tsarni and why is he accusing an Armenian? A cursory internet search reveals that he has had direct ties to western energy companies involved in the Caspian region. He has worked for Big Sky Energy, Golden Eagle Partners, and Nelson Resources Ltd., all three with direct investments in Caspian Sea energy projects. Could Tsarni’s ties to these energy companies explain his accusation against an Armenian?

Finally, why hasn’t a single Armenian organization or official complained to the news media about their dissemination of Tsarni’s baseless and libelous statements, accusing an Armenian for radicalizing Tamerlan? A similar situation occurred years ago, when an Australian newspaper, The Canberra Times, reported: “Pope Shot by Armenian Gunman.” In reality, Pope John Paul II was shot by Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turk!

It is high time that Armenians organize an anti-defamation organization that would vigorously pursue all those who libel and defame them around the world.
