Bankrupt Toni Braxton loses the copyright to 27 of her songs including You’re Making Me High

Toni Braxton1A recently single and broke Toni Braxton has lost the copyright to 27 of her favorite songs.

The six-time Grammy Award winner has filed for bankruptcy not once but twice.

The 45-year old R& B singer was given the opportunity to purchase the copyright of some of her best hits from her music catalog for $20,000 when they were put up for sale on July 15.

But Toni was unsuccessful in her bid to buy back ownership of some of her most famous hits – including You’re Making Me High and was outbid by another buyer TMZ reports.

Ross M. Klein doubled the low offer Braxton made and now he now owns the rights and can profit from hits like How Many Ways and Always.

But despite her gloomy predicament she still owns the rights to her most famous hit Unbreak My Heart, which was not included in the auction – for now.

Toni had previously filed for bankruptcy in 1998 for debts of $3.9 million and has legal trouble this year after her debtors tried to claim $754,000 in fees she made for International performances.

US Intelligence Report: All Armenians Demand Return of Lands from Turkey

Harut SassounianBy Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

The recently announced demand for lands from Turkey by the Prosecutor General of Armenia attracted much attention from Armenians worldwide and harsh criticism from the Turkish government. While this was the first time that an Armenian official had raised this issue since the country’s independence in 1991, the demand itself is not new. Armenians have been seeking the return of their historic territories from Turkey for decades.

A confidential 1943 document, declassified by the Central Intelligence Agency, reveals that the US government was well aware of the Armenian demands for recognition of the “atrocities” and return of Turkish occupied “provinces.”

The document dated December 13, 1943, authored by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the predecessor of the CIA, stated: “All the Armenian press in the United States is active in keeping the Turkish Armenian massacres fresh in the minds of its readers. Fearful that the Axis atrocities of the present war [World War II] will eclipse the atrocities of the last when the final reckoning comes, they are anxious to keep alive the Armenian case against Turkey. Armenians have present as well as past grievances against Turkey, whose capital levy tax ‘Varlik’ falls harder on Armenians than on any other minority group in Turkey. Even more unforgivable in the eyes of Armenians is the fact that Turkey holds provinces which, they are firmly convinced, belong rightfully to Armenia. Restitution of these provinces to Armenia is the goal of all Armenians.” Elsewhere in the document, OSS accurately reported that “Armenians, almost without exception, entertain feelings of deepest suspicion, hostility, and fear” toward Turkey.

A second declassified confidential document dated July 31, 1944, carries a surprising title: “Tashnags Turn to Soviet Russia.” The OSS indicated that “the once uncompromisingly anti-Soviet Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Tashnags) officially changed its spots, and the swing toward support of the Soviet Union, which has been growing gradually more perceptible during the last few months, has culminated in the adoption of a pro-Soviet policy at the Federation’s annual convention held in Boston the first week of July.” This OSS report was prepared as the Soviet Union had announced its intention to claim the Eastern provinces of Turkey (Kars, Ardahan, and Surmalou) in a post-World War II settlement. The Soviet claim was backed by the Armenian Church, the Soviet Armenian government and the Diaspora, including the anti-Soviet Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF).

The OSS astutely reported: “The Tashnags have never actually renounced their dream of a free and independent Armenia, including the Turkish irredenta, which has kept them at loggerheads with the USSR, ever since Armenia was established as a Soviet [illegible] in 1920. … With the vision of independence fading, the now Soviet-friendly Tashnags are turning their attention to the acquisition of the Turkish provinces of Armenia by the SovietArmenianRepublic.”

In explaining ARF’s post-war expectations, OSS stated: “If, as the Tashnags believe and hope, Turkey remains neutral [in World War II], she will be in a highly vulnerable position, and one item of payment for her neutrality, according to Mr. [James] Mandalian [editor of the Boston-based ARF newspaper Hairenik], would be the cession of Turkish Armenia to Soviet Armenia.”

The 1943 OSS document also contained a lengthy report on the Armenian-American press, focusing its attention on six of the 17 Armenian newspapers in the United States: “Hairenik and Asbarez (Tashnag)” classified as “rightist-nationalist;” “Baikar, Nor Or (Ramgavar)” and “Eritassard Hayastan (Hunchag)” classified as “liberal;” and Lraper (Armenian Progressive League of America)” classified as “leftist-Communist.” The last two newspapers are no longer in publication.

According to OSS, Hairenik and Asbarez are “strongly nationalist, anti-Soviet, and anti-Communist,” while Baikar is “resolutely opposed to the Tashnags and their principles. The Ramgavars have accepted the incorporation of Armenia into the Soviet Union as the most satisfactory way out of Armenian problems, and many articles are printed in Baikar extolling the Soviet regime in Armenia, particularly in its relations to the ArmenianApostolicChurch.”

OSS estimated that the 95,000 Armenians in the United States in 1943, mostly settled in Massachusetts, New York, and California, “retain a keen interest in the affairs of their homeland [Soviet Armenia], though few, if any, would go back there.”

Did Galaxy S4 start fire which devastated Hong Kong flat? Owner claims battery burst into flames which made him throw phone onto the sofa

Samsung Galaxy S4A fire which destroyed a Hong Kong flat started when a Samsung Galaxy S4 burst into flames, the owner has claimed.

The man, known only as Du, says he was playing the game Love Machine when he heard a loud pop from the phone’s battery.

He said he was so startled by the noise he instinctively threw the phone onto a sofa which promptly caught fire.

The flames gutted his apartment, but he and his wife were able to escape.

There have been a number of reports over the last year of Samsung Galaxy phones catching fire, although some have been linked to unofficial products.

According to the Huffington Post, Mr Du told Chinese website Xianguo.com that his phone, charger and battery were all authentic Samsung versions.

Samsung Hong Kong said it is looking into the matter.

Earlier this month, a Swiss teenager suffered serious burns when her Samsung Galaxy S3 apparently exploded in her pocket.

Last year, an Irish Samsung S3 owner claimed his handset burst into flames as he was driving his car.

Editor jailed for seven years and sentenced to 600 LASHES after starting ‘Free Saudi Liberals’ website

Editor Raif BadawiThe editor of a Saudi Arabian social website has been sentenced to seven years in prison and 600 lashes for founding an Internet forum that violates Islamic values and propagates liberal thought, Saudi media reported on Tuesday.

Raif Badawi, who started the ‘Free Saudi Liberals’ website to discuss the role of religion in Saudi Arabia, has been held since June 2012 on charges of cyber crime and disobeying his father – a crime in the conservative kingdom and top U.S. ally.

Al-Watan newspaper said the judge had also ordered the closure of the website.

Badawi’s website included articles that were critical of senior religious figures such as the Grand Mufti, according to Human Rights Watch.

The world’s top oil exporter follows the strict Wahhabi school of Islam and applies Islamic law, or sharia.

Judges base their decisions on their own interpretation of religious law rather than on a written legal code or on precedent.

Michael Jackson’s Doctor Conrad Murray to Be Released From Jail in October

conrad-murray-waits-leave-courtroomAfter serving less than two years out of his four-year involuntary manslaughter sentence for Michael Jackson‘s death four years ago, Dr. Conrad Murray is set to be released from prison in no time at all. The convicted cardiologist is set to become a free man on October 28 after being sent to jail back in November 2011.

The news has enraged Jackson’s mother Katherine, who believes Murray should have been tried for murder which carries a stiffer penalty as compared to that for involuntary manslaughter. “It is not right I will never be able to see my son again, while his mother can see him,” the devastated matriarch said.

A source who says Murray should have at least served the complete sentence for his crime calls the early release “an insult.” Murray’s sentence was apparently shortened by his good behavior, as prison authorities have described him as a “model inmate,” with some additional help from an overcrowded California jail system.

The Jackson family is also furious at Murray for refusing to give evidence in the current wrongful death trial against concert promoter AEG Live, feeling he has key evidence to prove AEG acted negligently resulting in the King of Pop’s untimely death. Murray supposedly wants nothing to do with the lawsuit for fear of being incriminated and has even gone on to threaten that he will reveal secret information about the singer and his family if he was forced to testify.

“If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?” Francis asked reporters.

Francis’ calls for treating gay people with dignity is a clear departure from the style and approach of his two most recent predecessors.

Francis’ remarks came in a wide-ranging interview aboard a flight back from Brazil in his first foreign trip as pontiff.

Francis, 76, also said in the interview that having Benedict at the Vatican is like having a wise grandfather at home, to whom he turns for advice.

43 dead after car bombings pummel Baghdad and other areas of Iraq

iraq-bombings-story-topA string of car and roadside bombs exploded across Iraq on Monday morning, killing at least 43 people and wounding nearly 200 others, police said.

Interior Ministry officials said more than 20 attacks were carried out by the “enemies of Iraq.”

Most of the casualties occurred in the capital, Baghdad, the officials said. All the attacks occurred in predominantly Shiite areas.

No group claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Iraq has been in the throes of relentless violence, much of it stemming from discord between Sunnis and Shiites.

Sunnis have long felt politically marginalized under a Shiite-led government in the post-Saddam Hussein era.

According to a CNN tally, the violence has killed nearly 600 people in Iraq this month.

Thousands of Bees Attack Texas Couple

Killer-beeA swarm of about 30,000 bees has attacked a North Texas couple as they exercised their miniature horses, stinging the animals so many times they died.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports (http://bit.ly/12RiVMA) 44-year-old Kristen Beauregard was stung about 200 times and her boyfriend about 50 times.

Beauregard says the swarm chased them down and followed them. She says they were sweeping up piles of bees “like a bad movie.”

She says firefighters sprayed a foam substance to clear the bees, and dragged the horses to a pasture to be treated by police and paramedics.

A 6-year-old show horse died before a veterinarian arrived. A Shetland pony spent a night at a veterinary clinic but also died.

The bees are being tested to see whether they are Africanized or “killer” bees.

Turkey arrests a KESTREL for spying for Israel… but releases it without charge after X-ray shows it did not contain surveillance equipment

Officials were told that a secret service agent had been discovered only to be handed…  a kestrel.

The bird was held in Turkey on suspicion of spying for the Israelis after a metal ring on its foot carried the engraved words ‘24311 Tel Avivunia Israel’.

Suspicious residents in the village of Altinayva then handed it over to their local governor.

But the bird of prey was freed after X-rays showed it was not carrying surveillance equipment and the ring was a tag for researchers to track migrations.

It didn’t stop Turkey’s Milliyet newspaper later carrying a front-page image of the radiogram with the title ‘Israeli agent’.

Ties between Ankara and Jerusalem have been tense since 2010, when Israeli commandoes killed nine Turkish activists aboard a ship that was helping to break a blockade of the Gaza Strip.

The site reads: ‘This overview will help you identify genuine Apple USB power adapter.

All iPhone and iPads are sold with official Apple chargers, although fake replacements can be bought online.

Earlier this week a Chinese man reportedly fell into a coma after suffering an electric shock as he plugged in his iPhone 4 in to charge.

Turkey Criticized as Leading Journalist Fired

Recep Tayyip ErdoganTurkey drew renewed international criticism Friday over its stance on media freedom after a prominent journalist who had criticized the government was fired this week.

The pro-government Sabah newspaper dismissed Yavuz Baydar from his position as ombudsman — or arbiter between the paper and its readers — on Tuesday after he wrote an opinion piece published in The New York Times that accused Turkish media owners of a “shameful” role in curtailing press freedom.

Baydar was the latest in a string of journalists to be fired or forced to resign for their coverage of the recent protests against the 10-year government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. What initially started as an environmental protest turned into a widespread display of anger against what critics say is Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian tenure in office.

Erdogan rejects the charges and has blamed the protests on an international conspiracy that includes the media.

It’s not the first time that Turkey has been slammed for its curbs on media freedoms. But the criticism has intensified over the treatment of journalists following the protests. A union representing Turkish journalists says 59 media staff were fired or forced to resign for their coverage of the protests since May 31, when they erupted.

The Paris-based Reporters without Borders has labeled Turkey the world’s “biggest prison for journalists” while the country’s main opposition party this week reported that as many as 64 journalists are in prison and a further 123 are on trial for journalism-related activities. The government insists the journalists are in prison for terrorism-related charges or for other crimes.
