More than 150 soldiers in Bangladesh were sentenced to death Tuesday for murder, rape and arson during a 2009 mutiny.

Seventy-four people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the mutiny at the headquarters of Bangladesh’s border guards in Dhaka in February 2009.

Several thousand armed soldiers of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) unit took control of their own headquarters in the capital for two days and massacred scores of people, including officers of the Bangladesh Army who were stationed with the BDR.

State prosecutor Mosharrof Hossain Kazal told CNN that 161 people, including Pintu and Ali, were sentenced to life in prison.

A total of 262 people were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three years to 10 years and 271 were acquitted of the charges against them.

Turkey to Separate Males and Females in Dorms

Turkey’s prime minister says that male and female students will be segregated in university dorms and student homes.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s on Tuesday rejected accusations that his government was interfering in citizens’ lifestyles but said his conservative party has a duty toward parents.

The issue is a sensitive one in Turkey which has secular laws but is governed by Erdogan’s Islamic-leaning party. Secular-oriented Turks accuse Erdogan of forcing his conservative religious outlook on their lives.

In June, Turkey was rocked by protests by mostly-secular Turks angered by what they said was Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian ways and attempts to impose his conservative views on society.

Cartwheeling Russian bodybuilder bursts into dance routine during competition and even does the funky chicken

Gym buffs have a reputation for being aggressive and ‘roid raging’.

But this balletic body builder is a law until himself.

During the journey to beef up his chiselled body, it seems Vadim Skornyakova has taken the time to learn the jive, the moonwalk, the funky chicken, and Indian-style dance.

And having built up quite the repertoire, he knew just the place for his debut: Russia’s body building tournament.

Competing for the title at Saint Petersburg’s 25th Cup Championship, Mr Skornyakova took to the stage before a room of rivals to strike his mandatory poses.

But the competitors and their families were left open-mouthed as he, instead, burst into a fully-fledged dance routine.

He emerges on to the stage sideways, with arms outstretched in the style of traditional Indian dance.

For good measure he throws in some classic body building poses – before jumping into some token jive moves that celebrity contestants on Strictly Come Dancing strive to master.

Singing along to the music – now a primary school song – he completes the performance with a moonwalk, some kicks and an artful spin before skipping off, leaving his competitors screaming and applauding.

The Russian video has attracted viewers from all over the world, mesmerised by Mr Skornyakova’s technique.

The host shakes his head in disbelief saying: ‘Well… Vadim is an incredibly positive person!’

One fan wrote on YouTube: ‘He had so much fun, this is so inspiring.’

Another said: ‘I hope he won. I will be watching this again.’

Dozens in Hospital Over Pollution in South Iran

Իրան, օդի աղտոտվածություն

An Iranian newspaper says more than 50 people were hospitalized in a southern city where air pollution levels spiked this week.

Tuesday’s report by the pro-reform Arman daily quotes the head of provincial health department, Mohammad Hossein Sarmast, as saying that at least 5,000 people rushed to the city hospitals in Ahvaz seeking medical assistance after pollution levels increased following lightning strikes and heavy rains on Sunday.

The paper also cites another health official, Mohammad Alavi, as saying acid rain may have caused symptoms such as shortness of breath among those admitted to hospitals.

Ahvaz is located in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan, which is dotted with oil wells and factories, and is among Iran’s most polluted cities.
