After his death in 1323 BC, Tutankhamun was rapidly embalmed and buried, but fire investigators believe a chemical reaction caused by embalming oils used on his mummy sparked the blaze.

A fragment of flesh from the boy pharaoh, whose tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter and the Earl of Carnarvon, was tested by researchers who confirmed his body was burnt while sealed in his coffin.

Tut has long fired the public imagination. He became pharaoh at the age of 10 in 1333 BC and ruled for just nine years until his death.

The discovery of his nearly intact tomb, complete with a gold coffin and gold funeral mask, was a worldwide sensation and sparked public interest in ancient Egypt.

Stunning treasure was found in his tomb, including an 24.2lb solid gold death mask encrusted with lapis lazuli and semi-precious stones.

Egyptologist Dr Chris Naunton examined Carter’s original notes and also carried out a virtual autopsy of the body using X-ray and CT scanning technology and now believes Tutankhamun was killed in a chariot crash in battle.

India plans trip to Mars to show off its ‘technological ability’ as part of its $1billion a year space programme (but country will still receive British aid until 2015)

India is making final preparations to send a spacecraft to Mars tomorrow.

The aim is to test India’s space technology to see if it has the technological ability to explore the solar system.

If successful, India will become only the fourth country or group to reach the red planet after Russia, U.S. and Europe.

More than half the world’s attempts to reach Mars – 23 out of 40 missions – have failed, including missions by Japan in 1999 and China in 2011.

Mangalyaan, which means ‘Mars craft’ is scheduled to blast off from the Indian space center on the southeastern island of Shriharikota – the start of a 300-day, 780 million-kilometer (485 million-mile) journey to orbit Mars and survey its geology and atmosphere.

The 1,350-kilogram orbiter is expected to reach its designated orbit September 24 2014.

Mangalyaan is expected to have at least six months to investigate the planet’s landscape and atmosphere.

Chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, the Government Office hosted a regular meeting of Armenia National Competitiveness Fund Board of Trustees (ANCF).

Once the agenda was approved, Tigran Sargsyan referred to this year’s main economic indicators. He advised that a strong growth had been recorded in mining and processing industries, as well as in the agricultural sector with sizeable State assistance and an array of private investment-supported programs.

“Encouraging is that the quality of the manufacturing industry has improved to the benefit of exports. This is evidencing that our public-private sector cooperation strategy is taking effect,” Tigran Sargsyan said.

Talking about the causes behind the low level of economic activity, the Prime Minister stated in part, “At this point, construction is the greatest challenge to economic growth. Statistics show 8.5-percent decline in the first eight months of 2013, while the share of construction in GDP amounts to 12 per cent. Construction will be our primary focus in 2014: we are developing a program to boost investment in this field mediating mortgages and affordable housing facilities”.

Among many other growth-oriented and business-friendly programs scheduled for 2014, the Premier singled out the liberalization of air services, the creation of a venture fund, the activities of the export insurance company, the Industrial Fund and the National Center for SME Development.

Noting that according to the Doing Business-2014 annual report, published by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Armenia has moved up 3 points to the 37th position, and the measures aimed at improving the business environment will be continued ahead.

The head of government next presented the government’s new welfare policy toward overcoming poverty and the ongoing pension reform.

In conclusion, the meeting discussed and approved the minutes of the previous meeting, the annual program and the 2014 budget of the ANCF. Reference was also made to the Fund’s international cooperation and future programs.

Thousands of Russian Nationalists Rally in Moscow

Several thousand Russian nationalists rallied Monday in Moscow, venting against the migrants they accuse of pushing up the crime rate and taking their jobs.

Many demonstrators carried Russian imperial flags. One group displayed a banner reading “Young People Against Tolerance.” The protesters in a southern neighborhood of the Russian capital ranged from tough-looking youths to older people.

Animosity is strong among nationalists against migrants both from the former Soviet Central Asian republics and non-Slavs from the largely Muslim Russian Caucasus region.

Some demonstrators praised the riot and suggested it was backed by the state.

“People received a signal that if they engage in such pogroms, there will be progress,” said Yevgeny Morgunov, a 36-year-old researcher at the Russian National Academy of Sciences.

He said he didn’t support the radical exclusionary sentiment reflected in the nationalist slogan “Russia for Russians,” but said “if Russians feel good, the other people of Russia will feel it too.”

There were no immediate reports of trouble at the Moscow rally, but the Interfax news agency said police detained 12 participants in a similar rally in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk. Nationalist demonstrations were also reported in the cities of Irkutsk and Kazan.

A U.N. report in September said Russia has about 11 million migrants. The state news agency RIA-Novosti, however, cited the Federal Migration Service as saying only about 718,000 of them have residency permits.
