Three bombs were found outside the palace in Cairo.

One officer died and three were wounded when one of the bombs exploded. A second officer died trying to defuse another bomb. That explosion injured several others, the ministry said.

The third bomb was successfully defused, Egypt’s state-run new organization Al-Ahram reported.

Authorities do not know who placed the devices.

Last week, a series of small blasts hit metro stations and a courthouse in Cairo, injuring several people.

Իսպանիայի նոր թագավորը և թագուհին

Spain’s new king and queen met with Pope Francis at the Vatican on Monday on their first foreign trip as monarchs, and invited the pontiff to visit Spain.

King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, wearing white as is standard protocol for a queen visiting the pope, were greeted by Francis in the papal library. They chatted for about 40 minutes in private. As they left, Felipe invited Francis to visit and bent down to kiss the pope’s ring, while Letizia curtsied.

In a statement, the Vatican noted that it was the monarchs’ first foreign visit and said the cordial talks focused on church-state cooperation in Spain and unspecified global conflicts.

Francis had met Felipe’s parents, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia, on several occasions, the last time during the April 27 canonizations of Saints John Paul II and John XXIII.

Juan Carlos abdicated earlier this month.

Horror outside busy Tokyo railway station as man calmly sets himself on fire in protest at Japan’s defence policy

Tokyo's Shinjuku station1

A man set himself on fire at Tokyo’s busy Shinjuku railway station on Sunday in what appears to be a rare violent political protest.

The man, who appeared to be in his 50s or 60s, was taken to hospital after suffering serious injuries, said Daiji Kubota, an officer at the Shinjuku police station. He said the man’s identity and the reason for the self-immolation was under investigation.

Footage of the incident on Twitter and other social media showed a man wearing a suit and tie sitting on a small mat along the metal framework above a pedestrian walkway with two plastic bottles of what looked like gasoline beside him.

Witnesses were quoted as saying the man spoke through a megaphone to protest the government’s moves to change Japan’s defence policy.

He then doused himself with gasoline and set himself alight as hundreds of people watched from below and from nearby buildings.

Japan’s Cabinet is expected on Tuesday to approve a proposal calling for the right to ‘collective self-defence,’ which would allow Japan to play a more assertive role in international security amid China’s growing military presence and rising regional tensions. Japan currently limits its participation even in U.N. peacekeeping activities to noncombat roles.

Privacy blitz for Clooney wedding: Actor persuades mayor of Italian town where he is likely to marry to introduce new laws

Clooney- fiancee Amal Alamuddin

George Clooney has persuaded the mayor of the Italian town where he is likely to marry his British fiancée to bring in draconian laws to guarantee his privacy.

Anyone caught swimming within 100metres of his mansion on Lake Como will be fined up to £450 by the local authorities. Pedestrians will also be banned from stopping on the road outside the property, which is in the picturesque Lombardy area of Italy.

The laws announced by Laglio Council are in operation 24 hours a day until September 30. Notices have been stuck on lampposts in the area with a warning in red type.

Laglio mayor Roberto Pozzi said that in the past there had been ‘unpleasant episodes’ when fans had gone up to Clooney’s windows and yelled out his name.

The new rules were designed to stop them doing the same and to prevent paparazzi from getting too close to his home, he said.

Clooney is currently making the most of his Italian mansion and has been taking his fiancé on a number of romantic dates in the area.

Iraq Villagers Flee Militant Advance in North

mideast-iraqHundreds of villagers fleeing advances by Sunni militants in Iraq crowded on Thursday under the morning sun at a checkpoint on the edge of the country’s Kurdish-controlled territory, trying to join large numbers of displaced who have already sought shelter in the relative safety of the largely autonomous region.

Many of those seeking shelter were Shiite Turkmen from villages outside Iraq’s second-largest city of Mosul, overrun earlier this month by fighters led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, the Sunni extremist group that has seized large swaths of Iraq and seeks to carve out a purist Islamic enclave across both sides of the Syria-Iraq border.

Also, a new insurgent artillery offensive against Christian villages in the north of Iraq on Wednesday sent thousands of Christians fleeing from their homes, seeking sanctuary in the Kurdish enclave.

While many villagers appeared to have been granted access by daybreak, hundreds of Shiite refugees were still hoping to be let in but were facing delays because they lacked sponsors on the other side.

Elsewhere, pro-government forces on Wednesday battled Sunni militants threatening a major military air base in Balad, north of Baghdad, military officials said.

FIFA starts disciplinary action against Luis Suarez after biting claims

Luis Suárez was today charged with biting an opponent in a World Cup match – which could see him banned from football for up to two years if found guilty.

The Uruguayan forward is accused of sinking his jaws into the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in Brazil, just 14 months after he had to apologise for doing the same thing in Britain.

Fifa’s disciplinary committee said this morning that it had opened proceedings against Liverpool player Suárez, and has asked his team to present evidence by 5pm local time (9pm BST) today.

A decision on whether he is guilty of ‘assaulting an opponent’ must be published before Saturday, when Uruguay play Colombia in a Round of 16 match.

Fifa’s rules state that any ban could apply to all football matches – both international and domestic.

Chiellini- SuárezThe clash last night in the sweltering Arena das Dunas in Natal, Brazil, came in the final 15 minutes of a tense decisive match between Italy and Uruguay.

Both teams were fighting for qualification for the next round and the score still stood at 0-0 in the final minutes.

But Liverpool FC star Suárez was not handed a yellow or red card – and minutes after the confrontation Uruguay went 1-0 up, winning the match and qualifying for the knockout stages.

Chiellini, who plays for Italian team Juventus, reacted furiously after the final whistle and insisted he had been bitten.

Author of UN Report Confirming The Armenian Genocide Passes Away

Benjamin WhitakerBy Harut Sassounian

www.TheCaliforniaCourier.com

Benjamin Whitaker, author of a United Nations report qualifying the Armenian mass killings as genocide, passed away earlier this month at the age of 79 in London. The world lost a great humanitarian and a staunch supporter of minority rights.

I worked closely with Mr. Whitaker at the UN in Geneva, Switzerland, for several years. He served as the British expert on the Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, while I represented the Indigenous World Association, a Native American non-governmental organization (NGO).

Mr. Whitaker was an activist lawyer, elected to the British Parliament from North London in 1966. He became executive director of the Minority Rights Group in 1971, publishing dozens of studies on minority groups around the world, including a trailblazing report on Armenians.

In 1975, Mr. Whitaker was appointed as British representative on the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, in the midst of a major controversy regarding a reference to the Armenian Genocide in a UN study. Rwandan Special Rapporteur Nicodeme Ruhashyankiko, author of the preliminary study, was pressured by Turkey to delete the reference to the Armenian Genocide.

To counter the Turkish pressures, a handful of Armenian activists, including this writer, successfully lobbied the UN Sub-Commission in 1978 to block the report after the reference to the Armenian Genocide was removed. I then asked Mr. Whitaker if he would be interested in becoming a Special Rapporteur to complete Ruhashyankiko’s aborted report. Mr. Whitaker agreed on condition that he would not do seek any votes for his appointment.

Given his impeccable reputation as a human rights activist, the Sub-Commission members overwhelmingly voted for Mr. Whitaker as the new Special Rapporteur with a mandate to prepare a “revised and updated report on the question of the prevention and punishment of the crime of genocide.” The only unhappy delegate was Turkey’s UN representative who knew that his government’s intimidating tactics on Mr. Ruhashyankiko would not work on Mr. Whitaker.

In August 1985, Mr. Whitaker presented to the UN Sub-Commission the revised and updated report, qualifying the Armenian Genocide as an example of genocide in the 20th century. After lengthy debates, Turkey failed in pressuring the Sub-Commission to delete the reference to the Armenian Genocide. By a vote of 14 in favor, one against, and four abstentions, the Sub-Commission adopted the report, thus confirming that the Armenian Genocide met the UN criteria for genocide.

Since then, Turkish denialists have engaged in blatant lies, claiming that there was no such vote and no such UN report! They even alleged that Farhan Haq, spokesman for the UN Secretary General, had told Turkish groups back in 2000 that the UN had “never approved nor supported a report that describes the Armenian experience as ‘genocide.’” I contacted Mr. Haq who told me that he was indeed aware of the report adopted by the UN human rights body which referred to the Armenian Genocide. He had simply told the Turkish groups that the UN General Assembly had not adopted a report on the Armenian Genocide.

Unfortunately, there has been very little effort by Armenians to publicize this critical UN report which acknowledges the Armenian Genocide. More surprisingly, in his UN General Assembly address in 2000, Pres. Kocharian called upon the UN to recognize the Armenian Genocide. The President’s aides had not informed him about the UN Sub-Commission report of 1985!

Since our UN days, I had the distinct pleasure of being in the company of Mr. Whitaker on several occasions. In the late 1980’s, we were both invited to Argentina by the local Armenian National Committee to deliver a series of lectures on the UN and the Armenian Genocide. In 2009, Mr. Whitaker kindly attended my presentation at the British Parliament on the Armenian Genocide and made gracious remarks about our past collaboration at the UN.

The Armenian Republic and Armenian communities worldwide should organize a fitting tribute to Mr. Whitaker, as 2015 is not only the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide, but also the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the UN genocide report.

There are three other members of the UN Sub-Commission who were extremely supportive during the adoption of the genocide report and who are still alive: Leandro Despouy of Argentina, Louis Joinet of France, and Mrs. Erica Daes of Greece. Despouy has already been decorated by the President of Armenia. Joinet and Daes deserve similar recognition by Armenia and the Diaspora!

Oscar Statuette From 1942 Sold $79,200 at Auction

օսկար արձանիկ,1942

An Oscar statuette from 1942 fetched nearly $80,000 at a recent auction in Rhode Island. As reported by The Associated Press, the auction house previously expected that the trophy would be sold at $5,000 to $30,000, but it finally went to a buyer at $79,200 on Monday, June 23.

The statuette went to Joseph C. Wright at the 15th Academy Awards. He was honored with the trophy for his color art direction in “My Gal Sal”.

The 13-inch statue, which weighs around 6 pounds, went to Wright’s nephew when he died in 1985 at the age of 92 in California.

The Academy previously investigated the sale of the statue. Their rule states that starting from 1950 the Oscar winners or their heirs are not allowed to sell the trophies without first offering them back to the Academy for $1.

UN: At Least 1,075 Killed in Iraq in June

Իրաք, զոհեր

United Nations human rights monitors say at least 1,075 people have been killed in Iraq during June, most of them civilians.

The U.N. human rights team in Iraq says at least 757 civilians were killed and 599 injured in Nineveh, Diyala and Salah al-Din provinces from June 5-22.

Spokesman Rupert Colville told reporters Tuesday in Geneva the figure “should be viewed very much as a minimum” and includes some verified summary executions and extra-judicial killings of civilians, police, and soldiers who had stopped fighting.

He says at least another 318 people were killed and 590 injured during the same time in Baghdad and areas in southern Iraq, many of them from at least 6 separate vehicle-borne bombs.

crowd celebrating Mexico's win -LA

Mexican soccer fans were dispersed by police after a celebration turned disorderly.

The majority of the hundreds of fans that poured into the streets of Huntington Park, California after Mexico won its world Cup match Monday were peaceful, but about a dozen began rocking cars and tossing bottles at riot officers.

The team beat Croatia 3-1 to advance from the group stage of the soccer tournament to the knockout round for the sixth World Cup in a row.

Fans poured into the streets of the suburban Los Angeles town waiving Mexican flags and chanting while cars tried to navigate by.

Police on motorcycles and even horseback soon arrived to control the increasingly rowdy gathering.

It took police more than two hours to finally bring the crowd under control and move it out of the busy street, according to KCBS.

EXCLUSIVE: Iraqi Kurdistan leader Massoud Barzani says ‘the time is here’ for self-determination

massoud-barzani-kurdistanIraqi Kurdish President Massoud Barzani gave his strongest-ever indication on Monday that his region would seek formal independence from the rest of Iraq.

Iraqi Kurdish independence has long been a goal, and the region has had autonomy from Baghdad for more than two decades, but they have never before said they would actually pursue that dream.

But the latest crisis, in which Sunni extremists have captured a large swath of Iraqi territory on the border of Iraqi Kurdistan, seems to have pushed the Kurds over the edge.

Barzani said that he would make that case to U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry when they meet in Erbil Tuesday; America is a close Kurdish ally, but opposes independence for the region.

A reconciliation, Barzani said, could be possible “if there was understanding between Shias and Sunnis, and if there is a guarantee of a true partnership in the authority.”

Honda, Mazda, Nissan Issue Recalls Over Airbags

Honda

Honda, Mazda and Nissan are recalling millions of vehicles globally for defective airbags manufactured by supplier Takata Corp. that could possibly explode.

No accidents have been reported related to Monday’s recalls.

Honda Motor Co. recalled 2.03 million vehicles for the airbag problem, including 1.02 million in North America and nearly 669,000 in Japan. It said they were manufactured between 2000 and 2005.

That came on top of a million vehicles Honda recalled last year for similar Takata airbag problems.

Nissan Motor Co. recalled 755,000 vehicles globally manufactured from 2001 through 2003, while Mazda Motor Corp. recalled nearly 160,000 vehicles manufactured from 2002 through 2004.

Like Honda, both companies announced recalls last year, but in smaller numbers.

Toyota’s affected models include the Corolla, Matrix, Tundra, Yaris and Camry. The models recalled at Honda include the Fit, Element and CR-V, while those at Nissan are the Cube, X-Trail and some Infiniti models. Recalled at Mazda were the Atenza and RX-8.

Activists: Israeli Air Raids Kill 10 Syrian Troops

Israeli Teen Killed In Boarder Attack From Syria

Israeli air raids overnight targeting Syrian military facilities killed at least 10 government troops, an activist Egroup said Monday.

The Syrian government has not commented on the airstrikes, which the Israeli military said hit nine targets early Monday inside Syria. The raids were in response to a cross-border attack the previous day that killed an Israeli civilian.

The director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdurrahman, said the nine Israeli strikes hit seven different Syrian military targets, destroying two tanks, two artillery batteries and the headquarters of Syria’s 90th brigade.

Israel also has carried out several airstrikes in Syria over the past three years, primarily targeting suspected weapons shipments allegedly destined for Hezbollah militants in neighboring Lebanon.

China sees red because the carpet rolled out at Heathrow for Premier Li was 10ft too short

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang

When the Chinese premier visited London this week he was greeted with an honour guard, a Downing Street reception and a meeting with the Queen.

But one aspect of Li Keqiang’s welcome fell somewhat short in the eyes of Chinese officials – the red carpet rolled out for his arrival at Heathrow.

After plans for Mr Li’s visit were shown to the Beijing government, aides complained that the carpet leading from the steps of his plane was not long enough.

The objection was raised with Ed Llewellyn, the Prime Minister’s chief of staff, but he is said to have told the Chinese official he had other things to worry about.

Mr Li is said to have demanded to meet the Queen, who welcomed him to Windsor Castle, despite the fact that it is relatively unusual for her to receive world leaders who are not heads of state.

Later he went to Downing Street for lunch with the Prime Minister and business leaders where he was served a Chinese-themed menu including claypot chicken in a savoury sauce with shiitake mushrooms.

China’s Foreign Ministry yesterday played down the diplomatic row over the length of the red carpet.
