False Accusation Linking Armenian To Boston Bombings Should Be Condemned

Many unanswered questions remain in the wake of the barbaric Boston Marathon bombings last week.

In the absence of established facts, it is difficult to reach an informed conclusion and find a motive for the murderous actions of the Tsarnaev brothers — Tamerlan, 26, and Dzhokhar, 19. It is interesting to note that Tamerlan carries the name of a vicious 14th century Turkic warlord who razed entire cities to the ground and butchered millions of innocent people.

Instead of jumping to unwarranted conclusions and making generalizations about Chechens, Muslims, and the Tsarnaev family, some probing questions are in order:

— Back in 2011, when the Russian intelligence services asked the FBI to investigate Tamerlan’s radical Islamist ties and plans to join underground groups, how thoroughly did the FBI carry out this task? If the FBI agents did a thorough job and found nothing sinister, why did they not follow up a few months later when Tamerlan returned to the US in 2012, having spent six months in the troubled Russian republics of Chechnya and Dagestan? And why did US law enforcement agencies fail to investigate the Jihadist videos and links to radical Islamist websites found on Tamerlan’s computer?

— If the Russian tip was not seriously pursued by US officials, was their decision based on political considerations or a proper assessment of the risk of terrorism? Since Chechen insurgents were fighting Russia for independence, did US officials prefer not to meddle in an internal Russian conflict? Did the US view Chechen “terrorists” as “freedom fighters,” concluding that they represented no threat to the United States? More significantly, what role did the anti-Russian stance of influentialneo-conservative American circles play in assessing the warnings on Tamerlan?

— Did the Russian intelligence services thoroughly investigate Tamerlan when he fell in their lap while visiting Dagestan and Chechnya for six months, particularly if they were dissatisfied with the FBI’s lukewarm response to their earlier request?

— Would this terrorist act killing four Americans and injuring close to 200 now prompt US intelligence agencies to cooperate more fully with their Russian counterparts to jointly combat terrorism regardless of international political concerns?

— Will the US investigate the 10-day visit to Turkey in July 2003 by Tamerlan and three of his family members, as disclosed by Turkish Interior Minister Muammer Guler? What was the purpose of Tsarnaevs’ visit to Turkey and who were their contacts?

Turning to Ruslan Tsarni, the talkative uncle of the Tsarnaev brothers, who made controversial and contradictory comments disseminated worldwide by CNN, NBC, Wall Street Journal, Reuters, and Time magazine, among others. Uncle Tsarni accused an unnamed Armenian convert to Islam in Cambridge, Mass., for radicalizing Tamerlan!

Tsarni, a Maryland resident, told the NBC Today show that one of his Armenian acquaintances informed him about an “outside influence” on Tamerlan: “He [the acquaintance] said, there is someone who brainwashed him [Tamerlan], some newly convert to Islam. I would like to stress [the acquaintance] was of Armenian descent.”

However, Uncle Tsarni, gave CNN a completely different explanation for the despicable actions of his nephews. He had accused them of being “losers,” claiming that they had brought shame on their family and the Chechen people. But, he later told NBC Today that he had called his nephews “losers” out of anger, and that he was now sure their crime had nothing to do with Russia or Chechnya. Tsarni also contradicted himself on CNN by claiming that the person who had “brainwashed” Tamerlan was the “new convert to Islam of Armenian descent,” not the acquaintance!

The question is, who is Tsarni and why is he accusing an Armenian? A cursory internet search reveals that he has had direct ties to western energy companies involved in the Caspian region. He has worked for Big Sky Energy, Golden Eagle Partners, and Nelson Resources Ltd., all three with direct investments in Caspian Sea energy projects. Could Tsarni’s ties to these energy companies explain his accusation against an Armenian?

Finally, why hasn’t a single Armenian organization or official complained to the news media about their dissemination of Tsarni’s baseless and libelous statements, accusing an Armenian for radicalizing Tamerlan? A similar situation occurred years ago, when an Australian newspaper, The Canberra Times, reported: “Pope Shot by Armenian Gunman.” In reality, Pope John Paul II was shot by Mehmet Ali Agca, a Turk!

It is high time that Armenians organize an anti-defamation organization that would vigorously pursue all those who libel and defame them around the world.

Kansas woman comes face to face with escaped circus tiger during trip to bathroom

tg1A central Kansas woman got the shock of her life on Saturday when she found herself sharing a bathroom with a tiger.

Salina resident Jenna Krehbiel was at the Isis Shrine Circus with her daughter when she decided to take a trip to the bathroom during the show.

The big cat had escaped briefly after its turn in the ring and had wandered into the bathroom while staff hunting for the beast blocked off concourses at the Bicentennial Center.

When Krehbiel walked in the door that hadn’t been blocked off, she found a tiger standing about 2 feet away, The Salina Journal reported.

Chris Bird, manager at the Bicentennial Center, said the bathroom was only 25 feet long.

‘Once she saw the tiger, I’m sure she knew to go the other way,’ Bird said. ‘Overall, it was a scary, surreal moment. I am glad no one was hurt or injured.’

The tiger was captured within minutes and returned to its enclosure.

Krehbiel, a social worker, said she didn’t scream or run because she is trained to stay calm.

Krehbiel said her 3-year-old daughter had a different reaction.

‘My daughter wanted to know if it had washed its hands,’ Krehbiel said. ‘That was her only concern. I think that shows the thoughts of children and that they wouldn’t have known there was danger.’

NCFA Board Meeting Reviews Armenia’s Economic Development Trends, ANCF Programs

10347_am_2Chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, the Board of Trustees of Armenia’s National Competitiveness Fund held a regular meeting in Office of Government.

After discussing the minutes of the last meeting and approving the agenda of today’s meeting, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan presented the economic results recorded in the first quarter of this year and in 2012.

Economic performance was said to have been on the upgrade in the first three months of 2013. In particular, the economic activity index was 8.7%, with the GDP standing at 11.7%. Compared to the same period of 2012, industry grew by 15.8%, agriculture – 2.3% and the tertiary sector – about 7%.

“Against a background of negative trade balance, exports tended up nearly three times as faster as imports. This was mainly due to the new export-oriented industrial strategy. We will push ahead with this policy line as we can see that our strategy is taking effect. By using its whole growth toolkit – credit funds, State guarantees and tax benefits – the State will continue to prop up the private sector with a focus on jobs and exports. The government has already approved 20 such programs. This year’s State budget was estimated implying a 6.2% growth index. Note that revenue proved AMD7bn up in the first quarter of 2013,”Tigran Sargsyan said.

The head of government reminded that FY2012 was completed with a 7.2% economic growth. According to the Prime Minister, the structure of the growth is particularly important as industry and agriculture boasted the largest share in the GDP, with a 9.3% rise recorded in agriculture and 14.5% in industry last year. A 48% growth was achieved in the field of water supply, recycling and waste management. The tertiary sector’s growth breakdown is as follows: wholesale and retail trade – 6%, transport – 14%, financial and insurance activities – 23%.

Construction was said to have broken even in 2012. The Prime Minister reminded that starting 2009 the main decline in the economy – 43% – was recorded in this very sector.

“In the following period as well, construction was the main deterrent force of the economy. Nevertheless, we were able to bring it to a breakeven point in 2012 and expect that the building sector will resume recovery to nurture economic growth this year,” Tigran Sargsyan added.

Macroeconomic performance was sufficiently good in 2012: budget deficit did not exceed the mark of 3%, inflation was within the planned target of 4%, and external debt was 37%, which is within the permitted threshold of external debt.

Coming to the future programs, Tigran Sargsyan stressed the need for continued improvement of the business environment. He reminded that according to the World Bank’s Doing Business report, Armenia has improved its position by 18 points ranking 32nd among 185 countries. The head of government said work will continue in this direction.

The Prime Minister next spoke about the reforms and programs implemented in the social, healthcare, inspection sectors and other areas.
In conclusion, the Board discussed and approved the auditor’s report on the Fund’s annual financial statement for 2012.

Tigran Sargsyan: “Our language will bring us together to make a unified fist”

6701_ru_4Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan attended the opening of Diaspora Ministry-hosted “Armenian language is in my heart” pan-Armenian youth conference in Yerevan.

Welcoming the participants on behalf of the Government, the Prime Minister said. “We attach great importance to all pan-Armenian events. This is why the Ministry of Diaspora was et up at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Armenia for the first time five years ago to unite Armenians around the world. Every week a language dies in the modern world, which means that the bearers of a specific language, alias an ethnic group disappears on the globe. Competition is growing keener in the 21st century, especially among and between nations, with the language proving to be the main pledge for keeping one’s ethnic identity. Our language will bring us together to make a unified fist, which can help us defy many challenges ahead.”

According to the Prime Minister, the modern world has entered a new stage, which is characterized by rapid changes and our young people should be able to keep track of their identity. As the chief driving force behind the Armenian identity, our statehood has helped us overcome many global and regional threats and challenges over the past couple of decades.

“We are building a statehood to implement our youth’s desire to preserve national values and ethnic identity. From this perspective, Nagorno-Karabakh is struggling for survival. The Artsakh issue is that of the future of our nation. The perception of this problem by young Armenians is the key to a safe future because we cannot achieve a fair settlement of the problem without unity,” the head of government emphasized.

Tigran Sargsyan believes that having a powerful army, for the first time in history our people can provide for the nation’s security.

“The modern world is a world of knowledge, where the Armenian nation has a competitive advantage. It is time our youth proved that we are part of the global competition among nations. In the 21st century, competition has moved to the intellectual field of knowledge, and this means that the number one problem is the formation of such an educational system that will give you the opportunity of getting competitive knowledge,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of the activities of Luys Foundation, which was established at the initiative of the President of the Republic of Armenia. Note that the Foundation subsidizes the scholarship of Armenian students at the world’s top 10 universities.

Scheduled for April 22-24, the conference is attended by 500 young people from 30 countries. Issues of nationwide importance will be discussed, including new approaches to achieving international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict, language and culture-related problems etc.

Israel says Syria used chemical arms, probably nerve gas

A general view shows Khan al-Assal area near the northern city of Aleppo, near the site where forces loyal to Syria's President Bashar al-Assad say was Tuesday's chemical weapon attackSyrian government forces have used chemical weapons – probably nerve gas – in their fight against rebels waging a two-year-old uprising, the Israeli military’s top intelligence analyst said on Tuesday.

Brigadier-General Itai Brun told a security conference photos of victims showing foam coming out of their mouths and contracted pupils were signs deadly gas had been used.

“To the best of our understanding, there was use of lethal chemical weapons. Which chemical weapons? Probably Sarin,” Brigadier-General Itai Brun said in remarks broadcast on Army Radio.

The Syrian government and rebels last month accused each other of launching a chemical attack near the northern city of Aleppo.

On Monday, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who is visiting Israel, said U.S. intelligence agencies were still assessing whether chemical weapons may have been used in Syria’s civil war.

Car bomb explodes outside French embassy in Libya leaving two guards seriously injured

f2France’s embassy in Tripoli has been hit by what appeared to be a car bomb this morning, injuring two guards.

It is the first such attack in the Libyan capital since the 2011 war that ousted former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

‘There was an attack on the embassy. We think it was a booby-trapped car,’ said an embassy official.

‘There was a lot of damage and there are two guards wounded.’
The attack on the fortified complex in Tripoli comes just over two years to the day since former president Nicolas Sarkozy ordered his airforce to start attacking Gaddafi’s forces as part of the liberation of the North African country.

The guards, both of whom were French nationals, were badly hurt, with one said to be in a life-threatening condition, said the source

Diplomatic missions have been targeted in Libya, most notably an attack on the US mission in the eastern city of Benghazi last September that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

4Հունաստանի նախկին նախարարը մեղադրվում է փողերի լվացման մեջA prominent Greek ex-minister went on trial in Athens on Monday on charges of money laundering linked to controversial arms deals during his years in power.

Facing a sentence of up to 20 years, 73-year-old Akis Tsochatzopoulos is accused of pocketing kickbacks on state contracts to buy a Russian-made anti-missile system and German submarines during his stint as defence minister from 1996 to 2001.

The Greek state ended up paying surcharges of millions of euros.

Tsochatzopoulos, a founding member of the socialist Pasok party, denies the accusations against him.

Other than Tsochatzopoulos, 18 more people, including his current wife, his German ex-wife and his daughter, are accused of complicity.

Germany fines Google for privacy violations

3Գերմանիան տուգանել է Google-ինGerman authorities said on Monday they had fined Google for illegally collecting massive amounts of personal data including emails, passwords and photos while setting up its disputed Street View service.

The data protection office in the northern city of Hamburg said it had slapped the US Internet giant with a 145,000-euro ($189,000) penalty for privacy violations on what it called a nearly unprecedented scale.

It found that while specially equipped Google vehicles took city snapshots between 2008 and 2010 for its Street View function, which supplements its standard map service, they had also picked up data from unsecured wireless networks.

“Among the information gathered in the drive-bys were significant amounts of personal data of varying quality. For example emails, passwords, photos and chat protocols were collected,” the Hamburg authorities said in a statement.

Dozens of Afghan schoolgirls taken to hospital after ‘poison attack by Taliban’

g3

Up to 74 girls in Afghanistan have been treated after a suspected poisoning attack at their school, officials said yesterday.

The girls became ill after smelling gas at their school, Bibi Maryam, in Takhar province’s capital, Taluqan.

Many of the children remained in a critical condition in hospital last night.

The Ministry of Public Health is investigating and samples of the victims’ blood have been sent for testing.

Sulaiman Moradi, Takhar governor’s spokesman, said the attack was to try to prevent girls from going to school.

He said ‘enemies of the government and the country’ were to blame for the mass illness.

There have been numerous substantiated cases of mass poisonings of schoolgirls in Afghanistan by ultra-conservatives who oppose giving women access to education.

The girls in Takhar, about 155 miles north of Kabul, were taken to a provincial hospital.

No-one has claimed responsibility for either incident.

Takhar has been a hotbed of militancy and criminal activity since 2009, with groups such as the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan active.

The Taliban banned education for women and girls but since they were ousted in 2001, females have returned to schools, especially in the capital city Kabul.

Afghan women have won back basic rights in education, voting and employment since 2001.

However, fears are growing that such gains could be traded away as Western forces prepare to leave and the Afghan government seeks peace talks with the Taliban.

Heroic father punches out alligator to save his son from the reptile’s jaws

a1A terrified Florida father got into a fistfight with an eight-foot alligator Friday to save his son’s life.

Joseph Welch and son Joey, 6, were on a canoe trip through the Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge in Boynton Beach when the boy fell into the water and the waiting alligator’s jaws.

‘I heard these blood-curdling screams and I saw this gator that had his right arm in his jaw and I just freaked,’ Joseph said.

a2Joseph told Local 10 that he immediately jumped into the water to save his son.

The alligator wasn’t wasting time either.

‘He just swam up to me and clamped my arm,’ Joey said. ‘He didn’t wait for a second.’

Joseph feared a struggle could tear the boy apart.

‘I didn’t want to play tug-of-war with the alligator and get his arm ripped off,’ Joseph told WSVN 7. ‘So I started punching the alligator on top of the head as hard as I could.’

Luckily an unidentified good Samaritan joined the man-versus-beast brawl and booted the alligator in the stomach.

Joey escaped with minor injuries and the gator was later tracked and killed by authorities because of its aggression.

Once on the attack, alligators are relentless.

Kaleb Langdale, 17, had his arm bitten off by a ten-foot long alligator last summer.

‘(I) knew I either got to lose this arm or I’m gonna die,’ he told reporters.

Inside the salt mine so large it has a mosque and electric railway and where tourists can follow in footsteps of Alexander the Great

m8The Khewra salt mine, the second largest in the world, is a warren of 40 kilometers of tunnels housing an illuminated mosque made from salt rock, an electric train and even an asthma clinic.

The mine 100 miles south of Pakistan’s capital Islamabad is the largest and oldest salt mine in the country, drawing up to 250,000 visitors a year.

Khewra was discovered back in 320 BC by Alexander the Great’s troops, but trading started in Mughal era in the sixteenth century.

The main tunnel at ground level was developed during British rule by Dr. Warth, a mining engineer in 1872 and has been flourishing ever since.

An electric railway has been working in the mine since the 1930s. It once hauled extracted salt from the mines, but now brings tourists in to marvel at the salt formations.

The mine is still the largest source of salt in Pakistan with more than 350,000 tons produced per year, excavated at 18 different working levels.

To keep the vast mine from collapsing, only fifty percent of the salt found is mined in the 110 square kilometre area.

The cavernous tunnels have alternate bands of translucent, white and pink coloured salt.

As well as the traditional mining, for the past three years there has also been an experimental asthma clinic at the mine, attracting patients from all over the world.

Salt caves are seen by some as an alternative to drugs as asthma suffers can benefit from inhaling antibacterial salt particles to clear the lung passages.

The largest mine in the world is the Sifto Canada salt mine in Ontario.

The girl was in good physical condition and was put under psychological care, it added.

State BNR radio reported that a ransom of 500,000 euros ($653,000) was paid for her release, but the information was not officially confirmed.

Lara Baneva was kidnapped on March 5 in the posh Boyana neighbourhood on Sofia’s outskirts while being driven to school.

Witness reports said three masked men had opened fire on the car, wounding the driver and abducting her.

Lufthansa cancels almost all flights due to strike

LufthansaGerman airline Lufthansa said Monday it has cancelled most of its domestic, European and long-haul flights at six German airports due to strike action by ground personnel and some cabin crew.

Out of nearly 1,800 planned flights on Monday, “we will operate 20 short and medium-range flights and 12 long-distance services,” a spokesman told AFP.

Services union Verdi called the strike after three rounds of pay talks with management ended without any agreement.

Verdi is demanding a 5.2-percent pay increase for 33,000 Lufthansa ground staff, plus employees of various subsidiaries as well as cabin crew members who are Verdi members.

The escalating pay dispute threatens to cause transport chaos across Europe’s top economy and comes a month after Lufthansa was forced to cancel nearly 700 out of a total 1,800 flights due to half a day of warning strikes.

Thousands take to streets of Paris to protest against legalisation of gay marriage set to pass this week

f2Thousands of opponents of gay marriage marched through Paris yesterday in a last-ditch protest before a law allowing same-sex union and adoption is passed tomorrow.

About 50,000, most of them older people and families with children, waving pink and blue flags massed behind a banner reading: ‘All born of a mum and a dad.’

Although it ended peacefully, riot police had been on standby after a series of violent demonstrations outside the French parliament earlier this month.

Yesterday’s march had been hastily organised after the law’s passage was sped up to avoid a big rally set for next week.

‘We warned the president back in November that we would not give up and that we would do everything to stop this law being passed, or to get it repealed if it is adopted,’ said protest organiser Alberic Dumon.

Numerous opinion polls have shown that a majority of French people support gay marriage but far fewer agree that homosexuals should be allowed to adopt children.

Senior religious leaders have condemned the same-sex marriage and adoption laws and many were expected to join yesterday’s protest.

The extremist arm of the movement has seen public stalking of government ministers and a spate of homophobic attacks around the country.

And in January, around 350,000 protesters massed under the Eiffel Tower and tore up the lawns beneath it.

Paris mayor Bertrand Delanoe, one of few French public officials who is openly gay, headed a rival march yesterday in favour of same-sex marriage and said that it was too late for anything to derail the law.

Hollande, who is grappling with the lowest popularity ratings of any recent French president as unemployment surges above 10 per cent, hoped to win some glory from passing a reform already in place in a dozen other countries.
