Viagra harvest shuts schools in Himalayas as locals rush to collect aphrodisiac fungus

Schools in rural Nepal have been left deserted as villagers scramble to harvest a rare high-altitude fungus said to boost sexual performance.

The reported aphrodisiac properties of Yarchagumba are so potent the fungus has been dubbed ‘Himalayan Viagra’, and demand in China and other Asian markets is such that it can fetch the equivalent of up to $20,000 per kilo.

Education officials in Jajarkot district – where around 8,000 students have joined the annual rush to hunt for the fungus in meadows high in the Himalayas – said there was ‘no point’ in keeping schools open.

Parents and teachers are also among those flocking to high meadows in search of the fungus.

‘In this district alone, about 8,000 students have left school for the expedition,’ Prakash Subedi, from the Jajarkot district eduction office, said in a report on ninemsn.com.

‘Without the students, there’s no point running the school so we close them. Even the teachers go to collect it,’ he said.

Mr Subedi added that extra classes were held during the autumn at some schools to make up for the time students miss during the spring tmie Yarchagumba harvest.

Although parents are urged not to take children with them when they go in pursuit of the rare fungus, schools’ pleas tend to fall on deaf ears because children can earn as much as 100,000 rupees – the equivalent of over $1,000 – during the harvest, Mr Subedi said.

The word Yarchagumba means ‘summer grass, winter worm’ in Tibetan.

While no research has been published on its aphrodisiac properties, Chinese herbalists believe Yarchagumba can enhance sexual performance.

The fungus is boiled in water to make tea or added to soups or stews, and is also reputed to cure a host of ailments.

Tuck in! People should eat more insects to fight hunger and reduce pollution, U.N says

The U.N. has new weapons to fight hunger, boost nutrition and reduce pollution.

But the answer to food crises around the world may not be that palatable – because they want people to eat insects.

The Food and Agriculture Organization on Monday hailed the likes of grasshoppers, ants and other members of the insect world as an underutilized food for people, livestock and pets.

A 200-page report, released at a news conference at the U.N. agency’s Rome headquarters, says 2 billion people worldwide already supplement their diets with insects, which are high in protein and minerals, and have environmental benefits.
Insects are ‘extremely efficient’ in converting feed into edible meat, the agency said.

On average, they can convert 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of feed into 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) of insect mass. In comparison, cattle require 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds) of feed to produce a kilo of meat.

Currently, most edible insects are gathered in forests and what insect farming does take place is often family-run and serves niche markets.

But the U.N. says mechanization can ratchet up insect farming production. The fish bait industry, for example, has long farmed insects.

Insect farming is ‘one of the many ways to address food and feed security,’ the food agency said.

‘Insects are everywhere and they reproduce quickly,’ the agency said, adding they leave a ‘low environmental footprint.’

They provide high-quality protein and nutrients when compared with meat and fish and are ‘particularly important as a food supplement for undernourished children,’ it said.

Insects can also be rich in copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, selenium and zinc, and are a source of fibre.

But the question on everyone’s lips is – are they tasty?

The report noted that some caterpillars in southern Africa and weaver ant eggs in Southeast Asia are considered delicacies and command high prices.

Mexican volcano spewing ash and lava threatens town as officials prepare to evacuate thousands

Thousands of people living in the shadow of this looming Mexican volcano have been placed on high alert following a dramatic increase in seismic activity from the Popocatepetl crater.

The 17,886ft active volcano near Mexico City, known as Popo, rumbled and shook during the night on Saturday, and has been spewing ash, lava and steam in recent days.

Officials have closed off an exclusion zone around the cone of the volcano and are poised to evacuate towns in its foothills as experts warned of plumes of steam reaching more than half a mile into the sky above the crater.

Authorities have alerted town in two central states as well as the capital, after Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center elevated its alert level to Yellow Phase 3 – the fifth rung on a seven-stage warning scale.
Should the alert level rise thousands of people could be evacuated from the most vulnerable villages in the shadow of the peak. Shelters have been set up in case authorities are forced to evacuate residents.

Popocatepetl is an Aztec word meaning ‘Smoking Mountain’. Popo lay dormant for decades until it began putting out small eruptions of ash almost daily in 1994. These eruptions started strengthening two weeks ago and have increased even more this weekend.

The millions of people who have settled in and around the Mexican capital mean experts regard Popocatepetl as one of the most potentially destructive volcanoes in the world.

Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi Concerts Scene of Stadium Heist

130514102344-bieber-johannesburg-0512-story-topThieves targeted the city’s famed FNB Stadium following concerts this weekend by Justin Bieber and Bon Jovi in a heist that included them chiseling through the wall of a safe room and lowering themselves into the room with ropes. And using a system of ropes and ladders to get back out.

Authorities are not disclosing exactly how much cash was stolen, but they believe most of the money had been collected from numerous bars, food stands and merchandise outlets.

No one even noticed the cash was gone until early Monday morning.

“It wasn’t an impromptu incident,” Jacques Grobbelarr, a member of the stadium’s management team, told Eyewitness News South Africa. “There was definite planning. Looking at the scene and the place they broke into, it looks as if they were planning this for quite some time, probably a couple of days.”

Private investigators have been brought in to help police, and several employees have been given polygraph tests, as authorities believe only those with an intimate knowledge of the stadium’s layout and security plans could have pulled off a heist of this caliber. Officials are also combing through footage from 10 security cameras around the stadium, which remains on lockdown.

The stunning robbery came just hours after Bieber wrapped up a Sunday concert for more than 60,000 fans. After learning of the heist, Bieber denied any involvement, telling TMZ, “It’ wasn’t me.”

White House Files Politically-Motivated, Anti-Armenian Brief to US Supreme Court

The U.S. Supreme Court asked the Obama Administration last October if it should review a Federal Appeals Court decision that had struck down a California law (Section 354.4) extending the statute of limitations on Armenian Genocide-era life insurance claims.

The U.S. Solicitor General, the lawyer representing the United States government before the Supreme Court, filed a response last week. He urged the Supreme Court not to hear the appeal, and let stand the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the California law “impermissibly” intruded into the federal government’s foreign relations powers.

Given Pres. Obama’s disappointing record of kowtowing to Turkey, particularly on Armenian Genocide issues, it is not surprising that the Administration’s brief went far beyond the question whether the Supreme Court should hear the appeal.

The U.S. Solicitor General erroneously claimed that:

— Contrary to the assertion of Armenian litigants, “California was not acting within an area of its traditional competence,” i.e., insurance regulation.

— The California law “intrudes upon substantial foreign affairs powers” of the federal government and leads to judgments “based on politically contentious events that occurred in the Ottoman Empire nearly a century ago”;

— Beyond simply intruding, this law would “disturb foreign relations” with Turkey. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush had opposed congressional resolutions on the Armenian Genocide, alleging that such measures would “undermine efforts to encourage improved relations between Armenia and Turkey”;

— Section 354.4 “would impermissibly intrude upon the federal foreign affairs power” in an area where the United States “acted in the post-World War I era to resolve certain claims by American citizens” through the Ankara Agreement (Oct. 25, 1934), American Treaty of Lausanne (August 6, 1923), and Treaty of Berlin and Claims Agreement (Aug. 10, 1922).

Several rebuttals are in order to the Solicitor’s General’s misguided and politically-motivated arguments:

— The California law does not intrude on the federal government’s foreign affairs powers as it simply attempts to regulate the obligations of insurance companies, an area of state competence and jurisdiction. This law provides an opportunity to right a historic wrong by forcing insurance companies to make long overdue payments to heirs of their deceased clients;

— German insurance companies are the defendants in this case, not Turkey, even though the latter filed a brief opposing the lawsuit. Remarkably, the Solicitor General’s brief mirrors some of the arguments advanced by Turkey.

— The Solicitor General selectively cites the opposition of Clinton and Bush administrations to congressional resolutions on the Armenian Genocide, ignoring the long-standing U.S. record on genocide recognition, including resolutions adopted by the House of Representatives in 1975 and 1984, Pres. Reagan’s Presidential Proclamation of 1981, and U.S. Government’s 1951 written statement to the International Court of Justice (World Court) acknowledging the Armenian Genocide.

— All three treaties/agreements cited by the Solicitor General are unrelated to the subject matter of this lawsuit. The Ankara Agreement and the American Treaty of Lausanne involve the Republic of Turkey, not German insurance companies. Also, the American Treaty of Lausanne lacks any legal standing as a non-ratified treaty. The Solicitor General undermines his own position by acknowledging that the California law “does not expressly conflict with the Ankara Agreement, the American Treaty of Lausanne, or the Treaty of Berlin and Claims Agreement,” which “addressed only the claims of those who were U.S. citizens at the time of World War I, not those who became U.S citizens after the war had concluded.”

The Solicitor General’s “legal opinion,” besides being flawed on all counts, is more of a political statement that deprives American citizens of their right to insurance claims.

One would hope that the Supreme Court will ignore the Solicitor General’s brief, and agree to hear the case, even though the chances are slim, because the Court accepts only a small percentage of cases submitted to it.

The Solicitor General’s overreaching arguments, if unchallenged, would have a chilling effect on all future genocide restitution efforts, particularly on the eve of the Armenian Genocide Centennial!

Armenian-American community leaders should take all possible measures to counter the Solicitor General’s politically-motivated arguments, by cutting all ties with the Obama Administration, organizing protests at presidential appearances, seeking congressional intervention to establish a federal commission for genocide restitution similar to that of the Holocaust, and amending Section 354.4 of the California law to circumvent the presented objections, no matter how flimsy. Moreover, the Armenian government should immediately withdraw its signature from the Armenia-Turkey Protocols which are repeatedly cited by the White House and U.S. courts as a pretext for opposing Armenian Genocide-related efforts, under the guise of wanting not to undermine Armenia-Turkey relations, which are non-existent!

It is now crystal clear that Pres. Obama’s deceptive use of ‘Meds Yeghern’ in his annual commemorative statements does not amount to an acknowledgment of the Armenian Genocide, contrary to the gleeful pronouncements of some gullible souls.

Finally, the Armenian-American community should reconsider its strategy of seeking genocide acknowledgment through congressional resolutions which are not only unnecessary, but counter-productive, as these unsuccessful attempts undermine previously adopted resolutions and cast doubt on the long-established U.S. record of Armenian Genocide recognition.
