Sydney Harbour Bridge to get first paint job in 81 years

3Սիդնեյի նավահանգստի կամուրջը 81 տարի հետո առաջին անգամ կներկվիThe landmark Sydney Harbour Bridge is to undergo its biggest makeover since 1932, with a new coat of paint that will take two years to complete, the New South Wales state government said Thursday.
The bridge, which links the northern and central parts of the city and is one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks, will be sanded back to bare steel and repainted for the first time in its 81-year history.
“This grande dame of Sydney Harbour is getting a makeover with a high performance fade-resistant paint to help her endure the punishing conditions,” state Roads Minister Duncan Gay said.
Huge sections of the bridge have suffered from rust and corrosion in recent decades with some 485,000 square metres of steelwork — the equivalent of 60 football fields — needing to be painted.
“The new paint, still in that famous shade that we call ‘Harbour Bridge grey’, is expected to last 30 years and won’t darken or change over time,” Gay said.
Fifty painters will carry out the work that is expected to cost Aus$20 million (US$19.2 million).

China toilet fall baby leaves hospital

2Զուգարանում ընկած նորածինը դուրս է գրվում հիվանդանոցիցA new-born boy was released from hospital five days after his mother accidentally dropped him down a toilet pipe while giving birth to him, state media said on Thursday.
His mother, grandparents and purported father will take care of him, it cited local officials as saying, adding that the father plans to test his paternity.
The case of the child, dubbed “Baby No. 59” by nurses after the number of his incubator, has sparked worldwide interest.
In China, there have been hundreds of thousands of comments on the country’s hugely popular weibos, services similar to Twitter, with users astonished by the circumstances and expressing good wishes for him.
The mother, 22 and unmarried, had kept her pregnancy a secret and gave birth unexpectedly when she went to the lavatory on Saturday.
The boy fell into the squat toilet and became stuck in a 10-centimetre (four-inch) tube, which firefighters and doctors spent nearly an hour taking apart before they could rescue him.

They will also be handed a report on promoting growth and competitiveness in Europe which is co-authored by Gerhard Cromme, the chairman of the board of Siemens, and Jean-Louis Beffa, the chairman of the board of French glass and construction material maker Saint Gobain.
Berlin and Paris have pledged a joint action plan to create more jobs for youth. Hollande has warned of a generational “rupture” if the problem is not tackled on an emergency footing.

The Board of Trustees of the All-Armenian Hayastan Fund held a meeting

Today, at the RA Government Reception House, the Board of Trustees of the All-Armenian Hayastan Fund held its annual meeting which was chaired by the President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan.

The President of Armenia welcomed the participants of the 22nd meeting of the Board and underscored that just as it was with the previous meetings, today’s meeting too would be of a strictly working nature. He said that decisions would be made not only to provide for a smooth functioning of the Fund but also with the aim of responding efficiently to the problems existing in Armenia, Artsakh and Spyurk.

Before referring to the agenda items, in his introductory remarks the President noted that last year in Armenia has been full of events, the election year: there took place parliamentary, presidential and then Yerevan City Council elections which have become an excellent occasion to highlight all these problems, to discuss them publicly and view the entire spectrum of possible solutions. According to the President, there has been no major issue of a national, social, economic or any other nature which in that period of time was not voiced and considered. The President of Armenia deemed it normal that the elections have also formed great expectations within our society which the responsible officials have to meet. “I believe in the coming years not only for the authorities of Armenia but also for the entire Armenian nation should be years of hard and efficient work. I also believe that we have the necessary base to register serious results and the fact that these will be no-election years is the perfect opportunity to talk less and work more.

There is no doubt that problems of Spyurk continue to be numerous and diverse. However, nowadays the situation in Syria and situation of the Armenians in Syria continues to be an open wound for us all. We, as the Armenian state and as the Armenian nation have been supporting and will continue to support our brothers and sisters in Syria regardless of whether they have come to Armenia or stayed in Syria.
No other all-Armenian structure reflects the aspirations and potential of the Armenian nation and of the Armenia-Artsakh-Spyurk triumvirate as it does the All-Armenian Hayastan Fund. Thus we have to work and with this I invite you all to work,” the President of Armenia said.

After adopting the agenda of the meeting and watching the report film on the activities conducted through the Fund’s financial means in 2012, the members of the Board of Trustees discussed the agenda items. The Executive Director of the Fund Ara Vardanian presented the report on the works conducted by the executive department in 2012. The Board approved the report, taking note of the report of the oversight commission. The Board also discussed and approved the issue related to the Fund’s Marathon-2013 key subject matter which was presented by the President of Nagorno Karabakh Bako Sahakian.

Canada Bans Nearly All Iranian Imports

bairdCanada is banning nearly all exports to and imports from Iran.

Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Wednesday Canada has grave concerns over Iran’s nuclear program. Canada is also adding 30 individuals and 82 entities to an economic blacklist.

Baird says Iran has produced nothing but “false promises and empty gestures” about its nuclear program.

The latest round of sanctions comes after talks between Iran and the United Nations Security Council, as well as Germany, failed to reach an agreement.

Canada shut its embassy in Tehran last September and ordered Iranian diplomats to leave, accusing the Islamic Republic of being the most significant threat to world peace.

Woolly mammoths could be brought back from extinction after scientists discover blood and muscle tissue buried in an ice tomb for 10,000 years

s5Scientists in Siberia have found the first ever well-preserved sample of blood from a woolly mammoth, which could be used to recreate the extinct species.

s1The 10,000-year-old blood was sealed inside ice beneath the carcass of a female mammoth.

Preserved muscle tissue was also found from the creature, aged between 50 and 60 when she died, according to the Russian team who made the discovery on islands off the northern coast of Siberia.

According to The Siberian Times, the blood will now be made available to South Korean scientists seeking to use mammoth DNA to bring creatures back to life.

The find – said to be the first time mammoth blood has been discovered – comes amid a hotly contested debate over the morality of Jurassic Park-style projects to restore extinct creatures to the planet, with some scientists insisting it will be impossible to get exactly the same mammoths as once roamed Siberia.

The mammoth was found in an ice tomb in the New Siberian Islands, or NovosibirskIslands, and parts of the carcass are especially well preserved because they remained entirely frozen for 10,000 years.

The samples have been taken for study to Yakutsk, capital of the Republic of Sakha, also known as Yakutia, the largest region in the Russian Federation.

The carcass weighing around one tonne has been moved to the Siberian mainland and is being kept in a ice storage.

The eventual plan is to plant an implanted egg into a live elephant for a 22-month pregnancy.

Earlier this year a group of scientists from around the world met for TEDx conference in Washington, sponsored by National Geographic.

The group were discussing the possibility of bringing 24 animals back from extinction, also known as ‘de-extinction’.

Feminist protesters strip off in Tunisia in support of local girl who Muslim leaders demanded should be stoned to death for posing topless

t3Three feminist activists have been arrested for holding a topless demonstration outside a court today in protest against the jailing of a Tunisian member of Ukrainian feminist group FEMEN.

FEMEN activist Amina Tyler, 19, was arrested at another protest against Islam’s treatment of women earlier this month after she sparked outrage across Tunisia by posting topless pictures of herself online.

t1A Muslim preacher called for the student to be stoned after the pictures, showing Tyler with the words: ‘My body belongs to me’ written across her bare chest in Arabic, were uploaded to Facebook.

She was later taken into hiding by her family after conservative preachers issued death threats against her.

Her supporters, three foreign activists, today disrobed in front of the Justice Ministry to protest against the court case.

The trio, one German and two French, approached the entrance to the ministry wearing coats which they took off, revealing naked torsos scrawled with ‘Breasts Feed Revolution’.

The crowd surrounded the area where the women were being held and when the activists were transferred to a nearby building the crowed surged forward before being fended off by police.

‘The Ministry of Justice is not a house of ill repute,’ said Fawzia Dridi, an angry bystander.

The crowd also attacked journalists attempting to cover the event as well as lawyers who tried to protect the reporters.

Tunisia’s prosecutor’s office later announced the women had been taken to main police station for questioning before being charged, and their embassies have been informed. The French consul visited the women and said they were in good spirits.

Lawyers said they could be charged with an attack on public morals or threatening public order, offenses which could carry up to a year in prison.

Nepal marks 60 years since Everest summit victory

3Էվերեստը տոնում է Էվերեստի գագաթի հաղթահարման 60-ամյակը (2)Nepal marked 60 years since the first ascent of Everest on Wednesday, celebrating the summiteers whose success has bred an industry that many climbers now fear is ruining the world’s highest peak.
Four days of ceremonies which have been dubbed the “Everest Diamond Jubilee” conclude on Wednesday with a gala at the former royal palace in the capital Kathmandu in honour of the first successful climbers, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.
The British expedition in 1953 changed mountaineering forever and turned New Zealander Hillary and Nepalese guide Norgay into household names and heroes in many parts of the world.
“Hillary and Tenzing were rock stars of the 1950s and into the 1960s,” Hillary’s son Peter told AFP in an interview. “The biggest thing about 1953 is that they were going into the unknown.
“People didn’t know what was up there, they didn’t know whether or not you could remain conscious, they didn’t know whether they could climb that final summit knife-edged ridge and get up what is now called the Hillary Steps,” he added.
A host of famous mountaineering figures will be at the gala on Wednesday night, including Everest legend Reinhold Messner of Italy, as well as Kancha Sherpa, the last remaining member of the 1953 expedition.

WHO urges action against obesity

2ԱՀԿ կոչ է անում պայքարել գիրության դեմAlarmed at expanding waistlines around the world, the UN’s health agency has urged countries to get serious about reining in a ballooning obesity crisis, proposing an action plan that includes taxing unhealthy snacks and rules against marketing junk food to children.
Once considered only a problem in high-income countries like the United States, where nearly 70 percent of the adult population is overweight, obesity is now growing fastest in developing nations in Africa and Latin America, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
As the urgency to tackle the crisis grows, member countries of the UN body late on Monday adopted a 2013-2020 action plan to fight against diseases like cardiovascular illness, cancer, and chronic diabetes.
“The cost of inaction far outweighs the cost of taking action,” the body said.
The plan, which targets risky lifestyle choices such as smoking, alcohol consumption and an unhealthy diet, includes a goal to halt the rise in global obesity levels by 2020.
Obesity levels nearly doubled between 1980 and 2008, when at least one in three adults worldwide was overweight and around one in 10 was considered obese, according to the WHO.

‘Obama’ surfs Internet from Chinese cafe: report

1“Օբաման” պարբերաբար հաճախում է չինական ինտերնետ ակումբPresident Barack Obama appears to be a regular customer of a Chinese Internet cafe, reports said, after the manager forged an identity card in the US leader’s name to help surfers avoid China’s web rules.
The card has a full-face picture of Obama, lists his correct birthday and gives his address as “White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC”, while stating his ethnicity as “Kenyan”, pictures showed.
As part of their efforts to control the web, China’s Communist rulers require Internet cafes to register users’ identity numbers before letting them go online.
The manager of the shop in Jinan, the capital of the eastern province of Shandong, created the card by printing out Obama’s personal details and sticking them on to the front of a genuine ID lost by its holder in 2010.
