Israel rabbi speaks out on being gay and Orthodox

4In openly displaying his homosexuality while serving as an Orthodox rabbi, Ron Yosef has broken a major taboo in the closed religious world that he inhabits.
Although May 17 is to be marked International Day Against Homophobia, the biblical stance on homosexuality remains clearly laid out in Leviticus, one of the five books of the Torah, which says that the sexual act between two men is an “abomination.”
But 38-year-old Yosef, who holds an Orthodox rabbinical diploma, believes it is possible to be “both gay and observant.”
He first became aware of his sexual orientation in his early 20s, with the realisation forcing him away from the faith and into the welcoming arms of secular Tel Aviv, the gay capital of the Middle East.
But it didn’t last long.
“By the age of 30, I was finally at peace with myself after deciding I could be both Orthodox and gay even though many observant people in the same situation had left the religious world,” he told AFP.
In 2008, he set up a website to help others in his situation which soon turned into an organisation known as HOD, the Hebrew acronym for “Orthodox Jewish homosexuals.”

“God is a gangster” play gets police protection in Romania

2«Աստվածը գանգստեր է» բեմադրության համար ռումինական թատրոնը սպառնալÕA play entitled “God is a gangster” will be performed under police protection in Romania after the theatre hosting it received threats, police said Friday.
The play, written by Canadian actor and playwright Nick Mancuso, since October has been periodically playing at a theatre in the western city of Timisoara, which recently received a letter threatening “merciless punishment” if it kept hosting it.
“Undercover police officers will be among the audience next Saturday and we will also have police officers in uniform in the area to be able to react fast if anything happens”, Daniel Langa, the deputy police chief in the city, told journalists.
A few days before the letter, the representatives of all Christian denominations in Timisoara had asked the theatre to change the title of the play so as to respect Christian values in the predominantly Christian country.
The theatre’s director, Ada Hausvater, told AFP she was “surprised” by the uproar, as the play has already been performed on seven occasions without any trouble since its premiere in October 2012.

Owner destroys £276,000 Maserati at car show in China just because he was angry with dealer over ‘poor customer service’

An angry car owner hired three men to smash up his luxury Maserati with sledgehammers outside the company’s show room in a protest at ‘poor customer service.’

The owner, identified only by his surname Wang, saw his £276,000 model turned into wreck in Qingdao, China,

He said he had addressed the dealership over a number of quality and maintenance problems and was dissatisfied with their service.

In a bid to draw attention to his plight, Mr Wang ordered the unusual protest outside the Qingdao International Convention Centre  on the same day as the start of the International Auto Show.

‘I hope foreign luxury car producers acknowledge clearly that Chinese consumers are entitled to get the service that is commensurate with the brand,’ Mr Wang told the Qingdao Morning Post, according to Agence France-Presse.

The supercar was draped in a banner accusing the Italian manufacturer of poor decision-making.

According to Car News China Mr Wang, had been in a longstanding feud with the dealership spanning more than two years.

In 2011, a businessman from Qingdao named Han Nan hired men to annihilate his $750,000 Lamborghini.

He was reportedly fed up with a mechanic who couldn’t fix an engine problem, so he decided to have the car smashed in front of a crowd on World Consumer Rights Day.

Chaos in Turkey as police use tear gas and water cannons to put down rioters protesting over Syria

Dozens of demonstrators were faced with tear gas and water cannons by police in Istanbul today as they protested against the Turkish government’s policy towards Syria.

Two groups of protesters were marching to Besiktas district near the Dolmabahce Palace on the European side of the city when officers blocked their path, reports the state-run Anatolia News Agency.

Some of the demonstrators, said to be mainly students, tried to climb barriers while police used water cannons and tear gas on the groups. Others took refuge in the historic Dolmabahce Mosque.

The crackdown followed similar scenes in Ankara yesterday, where clashes between students and security forces using cannons and gas saw 30 arrested and two injured.

Crowds in Istanbul and Ankara were protesting against prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s funding and support for the Syrian rebels against President Bashar Assad.

Syria has accused the Turkish government of facilitating the flow of arms, explosives, vehicles, fighters and money to rebels across the border.

Turkey, a Nato member, has hosted opposition leaders, rebel commanders and thousands of refugees since the Syrian civil war began.

New Yorkers threaten to sue artist who secretly photographed them in their OWN apartments and is selling prints for $7,500

Residents at a luxury Manhattan apartment block are up in arms after discovering that a neighbor at a nearby building has secretly been taking their photographs to exhibit and sell.

Artist Arne Svenson freely admits to secretly photographing his neighbors at the exclusive 475 Greenwich St apartment block in TriBeCa, but claims he hasn’t done anything wrong.

His photographs are careful not to show anyone’s face in full, but they do show the residents engaged in a wide range of intimate and private activities including cleaning, taking a nap, watching television and carrying their sleeping kids to bed.

The photographs are currently on display at the Julie Saul Gallery in the city as part of an exhibition called ‘The Neighbors’ which opened on Saturday.

Prints are available to buy for up to $7,500 and in sizes up to 5 feet by 2 feet.

Residents of the Greenwich Street building – where penthouses fetch up to $6 million – are furious over what they see as an invasion of privacy and are concerned about the safety of their children.

A number of residents who are featured in the exhibition are understood to be considering legal action. Although they’ve been advised the may have better luck in a civil case rather than a misdemeanor criminal proceeding because their faces aren’t fully visible.

Svenson, 60 who lives on the second floor of the nearby 125 Watt St building, is unapologetic.

‘For my subjects, there is no question of privacy,’ he said in a statement accompanying the exhibit.

Svenson, whose previous exhibitions have included photos of sock puppets, was inspired to do this latest project after he inherited a bird watching telephoto lens from a friend.

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE TRUTH AND JUSTICE ACT INTRODUCED IN U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

ANCAAs Turkey’s Prime Minister Recep Erdogan continues his official U.S. state visit, a bipartisan group of U.S. Representatives introduced the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act, a new measure calling upon the President to build upon the U.S. record of having recognized the Armenian Genocide by working toward improved Armenian-Turkish relations based upon the Republic of Turkey’s full acknowledgement of the facts and ongoing consequences of the Armenian Genocide, and a fair, just, and comprehensive international resolution of this crime, reported the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA).
“We welcome today’s introduction of the Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act,” said Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the ANCA.  “This innovative bipartisan initiative, building upon the U.S. record of having recognized the Armenian Genocide, calls for a new U.S. approach to Armenian-Turkish ties that reflects our America values and recognizes that our national interests require an end to Turkey’s denials and a truthful, just, and comprehensive international resolution of this crime.”
The Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act, introduced by Representatives Michael Grimm (R-NY), Adam Schiff (D-CA), David Valadao (R-CA) and Frank Pallone (D-NJ), reflects and reinforces previous U.S. affirmation of the Armenian Genocide as a crime of genocide, citing the U.S. Government’s May 28, 1951 written statement to the International Court of Justice regarding the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, President Ronald Reagan’s April 22, 1981 Proclamation and Congressional adoption of Armenian Genocide legislation in 1975 and 1984.
“Almost a century ago, over a million Armenian men, women, and innocent children were mercilessly put to death by forces of the Ottoman Empire in a horrifying attempt to wipe them from the face of the earth,” said Rep. Grimm. “The U.S. has tirelessly defended justice and human rights throughout the world, and we have a solemn duty to recognize, once and for all, the injustices of the Armenian Genocide. On behalf of the Armenian community in New York City,  I am proud to join with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in introducing Armenian Genocide Truth and Justice Act.”
“The facts of history are well-settled – 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children were deliberately murdered in the first genocide of the 20th Century,” Rep. Schiff said. “With each passing day, we lose a few more of the dwindling number of survivors. We should all feel a powerful sense of urgency, and the profound call of moral duty to recognize the Armenian Genocide unequivocally and without delay.”
Congressman Valadao stated, “Many of those able to flee during the genocide immigrated to the United States and settled in California. Today, their families continue to grow, thrive, and instill their cultural heritage in their adopted communities. However, the sense of loss as a result of these horrific acts runs deep as many Armenian-Americans in my district personally know a friend or family member who was unable to escape the genocide. We must ensure that the United States government properly acknowledges what so many already know to be true.”
“The time for the U.S. to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide is long overdue,” said Congressman Frank Pallone, Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on Armenian Issues.  “Armenia stands as a resilient ally of the United States and a nation dedicated to democracy and regional stability, and the Resolution introduced today shows that we will not stand idly by when the truth of this genocide is distorted by the Turkish government.”

Bangladesh garment hub to reopen after unrest

bangladeshi-garment-workers-protest-the-collapse-of-the-eight-storey-rana-plaza-compound-in-savar-on-april-27-2013-4Bangladesh garment manufacturers said Thursday they would reopen hundreds of factories in a manufacturing hub outside the capital, days after they shut the plants due to worker unrest following a deadly accident.
The manufacturers Monday announced the shutdown of the factories in the Ashulia industrial area after two weeks of protests over the death of 1,127 garment workers in the country’s worst industrial tragedy.
“We’ve decided to reopen the factories from Friday,” Shahidullah Azim, vice-president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, said after meeting government and labour representatives.
The association, which represents the country’s 4,500 garment factories, took the decision after the government assured it of the “highest security” for the plants, Azim told AFP.
“We met the home and labour ministers and representatives from the workers today. They assured the highest security for our factories,” he said.
Most of Bangladesh’s top garment factories, which make clothing for a string of major Western retailers including Walmart, H&M, Tesco, Inditex and Carrefour, are based at Ashulia.
Police said tens of thousands of workers joined the protests and dozens of factories and vehicles were vandalised.

KFC to go comes to Gaza… by tunnel

KFCJunk-food starved Gazans can now order Kentucky Fried Chicken to go thanks to a new smuggling service which brings takeout from Egypt via a network of underground tunnels.
It’s not exactly “fast” — taking several hours to arrive, with the Palestinian delivery company behind it charging hefty prices to cover the cost of fuel and transport.
“Last chance to order for the Thursday 6:00 pm delivery is Wednesday night,” says the Yamama delivery firm on its Facebook page.
Yamama then orders the meals, about 30 on a typical run, from the KFC outlet in the Egyptian city of El-Arish, some 40 kilometres (25 miles) away.
“We place the order with the restaurant in El-Arish, then drive it in a car to the Egyptian side of Rafah,” said Yamama director Khalil al-Ifranji.
“Someone takes it from there through the tunnels to (Gazan) Rafah. They then drive it to our headquarters (in Gaza City).”

Greek teachers drop strike plans during exam period

“There are colleagues facing dismissal, we don’t want families to cry and homes to shut,” Nikos Papachristos, head of the main teachers union OLME, told To Vima radio.
A vote by the union late on Wednesday failed to secure the necessary majority to pursue the strike, which was to begin on Friday.
The country’s main unions also refused to agree to OLME’s request to hold a general strike on Friday to support the teachers’ labour action.
