Cat blamed for 999 prank call after police break down door to find empty flat

Cat-on-the-phone-2669339 (1)When police heard shrieking from within James Cocksedge’s home following a silent 999 call, they feared the worst.

Breaking down the door, officers were surprised to find nobody inside the London flat – but soon worked out who was behind the call and the noise.

Police found Bruce, a Singapura kitten, hiding inside a wardrobe “looking naughty” – and quite right too, he’d accidentally made the emergency call by walking over the phone.

But the screaming sound heard by police was a domestic incident…of sorts. Bruce was having a scrap with Audrey – Cocksedge’s other cat.

The first Bruce’s owner, a 33-year-old sound engineer, knew about the call was when he came home to find his front door off its hinges.

By all accounts, Bruce has something of a fascination with phones.

“Since we had the landline installed Bruce always rushes to answer the phone when it rings” said James.

“He’s also fascinated by the buttons, which he loves to press.”

The feisty feline’s prank call left his owner red faced – and lumbered with a bill for several hundred pounds for a new door.

A Saudi-owned newspaper has reported that authorities have detained more than 16,000 migrant workers in the first 48 hours of a nationwide security sweep targeting foreigners working illegally in the kingdom.

Asharq al-Awsat quoted Saudi officials Wednesday as saying that nearly half of migrants were arrested near the southern border with Yemen. Another 5,000 had been detained in Mecca, where some Muslims stay on illegally after pilgrimage. Less than 1,000 were detained in the main city of Riyadh.

The sweep is aimed largely at creating more job opportunities for the kingdom’s local workforce.

The funeral that turns your ashes into a ‘SHOOTING STAR’: Company wants to launch remains into SPACE – and mourners can even follow their orbit with an app

հիշատակի թռիչք

Forget scattering ashes into the sea, or even turning your loved ones remains into vinyl records, the latest way to honour your dearly departed is to launch them into space so they can become a shooting star.

Elysium Space is hoping to launch its first so-called ‘memorial flights’ in summer 2014 from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

As part of the plans, the human remains will be launched into space and orbit the Earth for ‘several months’ before burning up in the atmosphere and becoming a ‘shooting star.’

The company plans to work with space transport companies including SpaceX, Civeit and Orbital Sciences to launch the flights.

The price of a launch is $1,900 (£1,180) and for that, customers will be sent a kit containing a scoop to transfer ‘a symbolic portion’ of ashes into an enclosed ash capsule.

The capsule can be engraved with three initials and customers can also write a remembrance message of up to 80 characters that will be added to the metal plates attached on the spacecraft.

Family members will also get an invitation to the launch viewing event as well as a video of the takeoff. After the launch, a certificate will be sent to the family to commemorate the completion of the memorial flight.

The California-based firm has already launched a mobile app to track the ashes sent into space on the flights.

The firm adds that the plans adhere to space environment rules and the spacecraft and ashes have been designed not to create orbital pollution.

Land of the Rising Sun: Fertile Ground for Armenians

Հարութ Սասունյան

By Harut Sassounian

Publisher, The California Courier

I visited the amazing land of Japan for the first time last month.

The minute I set foot on Tokyo’s Narita Airport, it felt like entering a surreal country — almost too good to be true!

The first thing that one notices is the extreme politeness of the Japanese people. Their repeated bowing to greet guests is incomparably more respectful than our customary casual handshake. I was amazed to find out that everyone gets the same excellent service, at no extra charge! No one gets tips, including waiters and parking attendants.

Japan is impeccably clean. No litter can be found anywhere. Piles of dirt or garbage are nowhere to be seen. You cannot find a single car in the streets with a dent or speck of dust. Even trucks hauling construction materials are covered with a net and hosed down before leaving the loading site, not to scatter dirt on city streets. Amazingly, after a typhoon directly hit Tokyo, there was no debris in the streets.

To top it all, there is very little crime in Japan due to the calm demeanor of the population and absence of guns. Despite Tokyo’s crowded sidewalks, everyone goes about their business, without pushing or shoving, arguing or raising their voices. Drivers respect traffic laws and conduct their cars in an orderly manner, without cutting in front of others or honking horns.

Many people are seen in the streets wearing medical masks. One would think that they were protecting themselves from catching the flu or some other disease from passersby. It turns out that the mask wearers were the ones who had the flu. They were being exceedingly considerate, not wishing to pass their germs onto others!

Besides visiting Japanese shrines and ancient palaces, I had the opportunity to engage in Armenian-related activities in this far away land. I was pleased to learn that the Republic of Armenia had an Embassy in Tokyo. Amb. Hrant Pogosyan and Attache Monica Simonyan received me graciously and briefed me about their relentless efforts to foster friendly relations between the two countries. We discussed opportunities for collaboration between the Armenian community in the United States and the Embassy of Armenia in Japan, particularly during the upcoming Centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

A totally unexpected treat was the concert organized by the Armenian Embassy, celebrating the 110th anniversary of Aram Khachaturian’s birth. Three top musicians, pianists Armen Babakhanian and Julietta Vardanyan, and cellist Aram Talalyan, had flown from Armenia especially for this one night performance. The Japanese audience, foreign diplomats, and a handful of Armenian students and businessmen were highly impressed with Khachaturian’s music and the virtuosity of the performers. I even met a Japanese scholar who spoke Armenian fluently. I had never heard Armenian spoken with a Japanese accent!

Japanese friends had kindly arranged that I meet CEO’s of several major corporations in Tokyo and Kyoto and discuss investment possibilities in Armenia. I was highly impressed by state of the art stem-cell research laboratory at Kyoto University.

Later that day I had the unique opportunity to give a lecture to a group of bright university students and their professors. They spoke English quite well and asked numerous questions, even though I was told that Japanese students normally do not ask questions. My talk covered the Armenian Genocide, the Artsakh (Karabagh) conflict, Syria’s civil war, the Arab Spring, the controversial issue of Comfort Women, and the necessity of peaceful resolution of conflicts.

After returning to Tokyo, my hosts surprised me by presenting me from the archives of The Japan Times newspaper, a copy of the issue dated Oct. 4, 1998, which had a half-page article about my humanitarian efforts for Armenia on behalf of the United Armenian Fund.

My final meeting was with three high-ranking Japanese government officials with whom I discussed at length Japan’s relations with Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, China, Russia, and South Korea.

My conversations with Japanese university students and government leaders made me realize that Armenians have made a habit of concentrating all of their political efforts on the Middle East, Europe, North and South America, and totally ignoring the large number of strategically important countries in Asia.

It may be politically and economically more productive to extend the span of our attention to countries whose citizens know hardly anything about Armenia and Armenians.

dhaka-bangladesh-military-court

More than 150 soldiers in Bangladesh were sentenced to death Tuesday for murder, rape and arson during a 2009 mutiny.

Seventy-four people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the mutiny at the headquarters of Bangladesh’s border guards in Dhaka in February 2009.

Several thousand armed soldiers of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) unit took control of their own headquarters in the capital for two days and massacred scores of people, including officers of the Bangladesh Army who were stationed with the BDR.

State prosecutor Mosharrof Hossain Kazal told CNN that 161 people, including Pintu and Ali, were sentenced to life in prison.

A total of 262 people were sentenced to prison terms ranging from three years to 10 years and 271 were acquitted of the charges against them.

Turkey to Separate Males and Females in Dorms

Turkey’s prime minister says that male and female students will be segregated in university dorms and student homes.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s on Tuesday rejected accusations that his government was interfering in citizens’ lifestyles but said his conservative party has a duty toward parents.

The issue is a sensitive one in Turkey which has secular laws but is governed by Erdogan’s Islamic-leaning party. Secular-oriented Turks accuse Erdogan of forcing his conservative religious outlook on their lives.

In June, Turkey was rocked by protests by mostly-secular Turks angered by what they said was Erdogan’s increasingly authoritarian ways and attempts to impose his conservative views on society.

Cartwheeling Russian bodybuilder bursts into dance routine during competition and even does the funky chicken

Gym buffs have a reputation for being aggressive and ‘roid raging’.

But this balletic body builder is a law until himself.

During the journey to beef up his chiselled body, it seems Vadim Skornyakova has taken the time to learn the jive, the moonwalk, the funky chicken, and Indian-style dance.

And having built up quite the repertoire, he knew just the place for his debut: Russia’s body building tournament.

Competing for the title at Saint Petersburg’s 25th Cup Championship, Mr Skornyakova took to the stage before a room of rivals to strike his mandatory poses.

But the competitors and their families were left open-mouthed as he, instead, burst into a fully-fledged dance routine.

He emerges on to the stage sideways, with arms outstretched in the style of traditional Indian dance.

For good measure he throws in some classic body building poses – before jumping into some token jive moves that celebrity contestants on Strictly Come Dancing strive to master.

Singing along to the music – now a primary school song – he completes the performance with a moonwalk, some kicks and an artful spin before skipping off, leaving his competitors screaming and applauding.

The Russian video has attracted viewers from all over the world, mesmerised by Mr Skornyakova’s technique.

The host shakes his head in disbelief saying: ‘Well… Vadim is an incredibly positive person!’

One fan wrote on YouTube: ‘He had so much fun, this is so inspiring.’

Another said: ‘I hope he won. I will be watching this again.’

Dozens in Hospital Over Pollution in South Iran

Իրան, օդի աղտոտվածություն

An Iranian newspaper says more than 50 people were hospitalized in a southern city where air pollution levels spiked this week.

Tuesday’s report by the pro-reform Arman daily quotes the head of provincial health department, Mohammad Hossein Sarmast, as saying that at least 5,000 people rushed to the city hospitals in Ahvaz seeking medical assistance after pollution levels increased following lightning strikes and heavy rains on Sunday.

The paper also cites another health official, Mohammad Alavi, as saying acid rain may have caused symptoms such as shortness of breath among those admitted to hospitals.

Ahvaz is located in the oil-rich province of Khuzestan, which is dotted with oil wells and factories, and is among Iran’s most polluted cities.

Mummy-fried! Tutankhamun’s body spontaneously combusted INSIDE his coffin following botched embalming job after he died in speeding chariot accident

Եգիպոս,Թութանխամոն, սարկոֆագ

The mummified body of Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun burst into flames inside his sarcophagus after a botched attempt to embalm him, according to scientists in a new documentary.

Եգիպոս,Թութանխամոն, սարկոֆագ

After his death in 1323 BC, Tutankhamun was rapidly embalmed and buried, but fire investigators believe a chemical reaction caused by embalming oils used on his mummy sparked the blaze.

A fragment of flesh from the boy pharaoh, whose tomb was discovered in 1922 by Howard Carter and the Earl of Carnarvon, was tested by researchers who confirmed his body was burnt while sealed in his coffin.

Եգիպոս,Թութանխամոն, սարկոֆագ

Tut has long fired the public imagination. He became pharaoh at the age of 10 in 1333 BC and ruled for just nine years until his death.

The discovery of his nearly intact tomb, complete with a gold coffin and gold funeral mask, was a worldwide sensation and sparked public interest in ancient Egypt.

Stunning treasure was found in his tomb, including an 24.2lb solid gold death mask encrusted with lapis lazuli and semi-precious stones.

Egyptologist Dr Chris Naunton examined Carter’s original notes and also carried out a virtual autopsy of the body using X-ray and CT scanning technology and now believes Tutankhamun was killed in a chariot crash in battle.

India plans trip to Mars to show off its ‘technological ability’ as part of its $1billion a year space programme (but country will still receive British aid until 2015)

Հնդկաստան,տիեզերանավ,Մարս

India is making final preparations to send a spacecraft to Mars tomorrow.

The aim is to test India’s space technology to see if it has the technological ability to explore the solar system.

If successful, India will become only the fourth country or group to reach the red planet after Russia, U.S. and Europe.

More than half the world’s attempts to reach Mars – 23 out of 40 missions – have failed, including missions by Japan in 1999 and China in 2011.

Mangalyaan, which means ‘Mars craft’ is scheduled to blast off from the Indian space center on the southeastern island of Shriharikota – the start of a 300-day, 780 million-kilometer (485 million-mile) journey to orbit Mars and survey its geology and atmosphere.

The 1,350-kilogram orbiter is expected to reach its designated orbit September 24 2014.

Mangalyaan is expected to have at least six months to investigate the planet’s landscape and atmosphere.

ANCF Board of Trustees Discuss Economic Development Trends In Armenia

ՀԱՄՀ հոգաբարձուների խորհրդի նիստ

Chaired by Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, the Government Office hosted a regular meeting of Armenia National Competitiveness Fund Board of Trustees (ANCF).

Once the agenda was approved, Tigran Sargsyan referred to this year’s main economic indicators. He advised that a strong growth had been recorded in mining and processing industries, as well as in the agricultural sector with sizeable State assistance and an array of private investment-supported programs.

“Encouraging is that the quality of the manufacturing industry has improved to the benefit of exports. This is evidencing that our public-private sector cooperation strategy is taking effect,” Tigran Sargsyan said.

Talking about the causes behind the low level of economic activity, the Prime Minister stated in part, “At this point, construction is the greatest challenge to economic growth. Statistics show 8.5-percent decline in the first eight months of 2013, while the share of construction in GDP amounts to 12 per cent. Construction will be our primary focus in 2014: we are developing a program to boost investment in this field mediating mortgages and affordable housing facilities”.

Among many other growth-oriented and business-friendly programs scheduled for 2014, the Premier singled out the liberalization of air services, the creation of a venture fund, the activities of the export insurance company, the Industrial Fund and the National Center for SME Development.

Noting that according to the Doing Business-2014 annual report, published by the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Armenia has moved up 3 points to the 37th position, and the measures aimed at improving the business environment will be continued ahead.

The head of government next presented the government’s new welfare policy toward overcoming poverty and the ongoing pension reform.

In conclusion, the meeting discussed and approved the minutes of the previous meeting, the annual program and the 2014 budget of the ANCF. Reference was also made to the Fund’s international cooperation and future programs.

Thousands of Russian Nationalists Rally in Moscow

Several thousand Russian nationalists rallied Monday in Moscow, venting against the migrants they accuse of pushing up the crime rate and taking their jobs.

Many demonstrators carried Russian imperial flags. One group displayed a banner reading “Young People Against Tolerance.” The protesters in a southern neighborhood of the Russian capital ranged from tough-looking youths to older people.

Animosity is strong among nationalists against migrants both from the former Soviet Central Asian republics and non-Slavs from the largely Muslim Russian Caucasus region.

Some demonstrators praised the riot and suggested it was backed by the state.

“People received a signal that if they engage in such pogroms, there will be progress,” said Yevgeny Morgunov, a 36-year-old researcher at the Russian National Academy of Sciences.

He said he didn’t support the radical exclusionary sentiment reflected in the nationalist slogan “Russia for Russians,” but said “if Russians feel good, the other people of Russia will feel it too.”

There were no immediate reports of trouble at the Moscow rally, but the Interfax news agency said police detained 12 participants in a similar rally in the Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk. Nationalist demonstrations were also reported in the cities of Irkutsk and Kazan.

A U.N. report in September said Russia has about 11 million migrants. The state news agency RIA-Novosti, however, cited the Federal Migration Service as saying only about 718,000 of them have residency permits.

Georgia’s PM Nominates Successor

 Բիձինա Իվանիշվիլի

Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili has nominated the country’s interior minister as his successor.

The nomination on Saturday of Irakli Gabriashvili comes a week after elections that chose Ivanishvili’s ally Giorgi Margvelashvili as the country’s new president.

Billionaire Ivanishvili, whose Georgian Dream coalition routed President Mikhail Saakashvili’s party in parliamentary elections a year ago, had previously announced his intention to step down as premier after the presidential vote. He is expected to remain highly influential even without a formal post.

Ivanishvili is expected to step down directly after the Nov. 17 presidential inauguration, after which parliament is to vote for a new prime minister. The 31-year-old Gabriashvili has headed the ministry that controls the country’s police since October 2012.

Toxic nuclear waste dumped illegally by the Mafia is blamed for surge in cancers in southern Italy

Toxic nuclear and industrial waste, dumped illegally by the Neapolitan mafia, is responsible for a surge in cancers in southern Italy, it is feared.

The Italian Senate is investigating a link between buried pollutants and a rise of almost 50 per cent in tumours found in the inhabitants of several towns around Naples.

In classified documents from 1997, only now released to the public, a mafia kingpin warned authorities that the poison in the ground would kill everyone ‘within two decades’.

Doctors first noticed that cancers in towns around Naples were on the rise in the 1990s. But since that time they have increased by 40 per cent in women and 47 per cent in men.

Camorra chief Francesco Schiavone, once the world’s number one mafia fugitive, said: ‘The inhabitants are all at risk of dying from cancer within twenty years.
Francesco Schiavone was arrested and eventually given a life sentence for a string of murders.

In secret out-of-court testimony he told lawyers how the Casalesi clan ran ‘a military style operation’ dumping millions of tonnes of waste on farmland, in caves, in quarries and even on the edge of towns.

The cost of a clean up would run into billions, he said, describing several sites in the suburbs of Naples.

‘To clean it up it would cost the entire Italian budget for a year I think.’

The lower house in the Italian Parliament had elected to make the documents public in the interests of transparency.

Kanye and Kim sue over leaked Kasdashian proposal video

Kim-Kardashian-Instagram-Engagement-Ring

Kanye West and Kim Kardashian are accusing a YouTube co-founder of illegally publishing video of their engagement party to boost his new “foundering” website.

A lawsuit filed Thursday by the celebrity couple blasts Chad Hurley, accusing him of secretly recording West’s surprise proposal to Kardashian in the middle of San Francisco’s AT&TPark on October 21.

The video shows West kneeling near second base to ask Kardashian to marry him while a large orchestra plays in center field.

Hurley “finagled entry” into the birthday party that West threw for his girlfriend, although only “several dozen people” were invited, the lawsuit said. Although he tagged along with someone who was invited, he was permitted to stay “only after giving his word — including in writing — that he would not publish any aspect of the event.” The court filing includes a photo of Hurley purportedly holding the signed confidentiality agreement in his hand.

The video is titled “PLEEESE MARRY MEEE!!! Congrats Kim and Kanye!”

It is still posted on the website, and the counter indicates it has been viewed 1.6 million times.

Hurley and his company did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment on the lawsuit.
